Value of Drag 3 Intercooler piping?
There is the revhard piping and fmax piping. The drag and fmax are the only ones that i know are chromed, the revhard piping is a argent silver color from the kits that i have seen. The Drag piping retails for 450.00 without a BOV, and i dont think that it includes the hose clamps and silicone connectors which are easily another 40-50.00. Used prices between 300-350 w/o bov, and 400-450 w/bov are excellent as long as the piping is complete with everything. To get custom piping made can be expensive from a shop if they are fabricating them. Expect to pay 100-150.00 for piping materials, than usually another 40-50.00 for a good welder/fabricator. Probably takes around 5-6 hours on average to make the piping fit well.
DRAG piping looks nice and all but it is too expensive for people like me. Besides the above mentioned, there is also DIY (do-it-yerself) piping aka JC Whitney piping. Just buy some U-bends, J-bends or whatever and just mock it up w/the rest of the components on your car. This site has some good info on how to do it: http://www.cse.uconn.edu/~yelevich/turbo/turbo.html HTH
That is nice for some, but not everyone has a welder or a place to have things welded. The piping is not that expensive if you buy it used. Also, its semi difficult to fabricate the piping if it is your first time doing it. It took me around 12 hours to do the piping to where it fit perfectly.
$300-350 for just piping is just too much for me. Is it really worth that much? I mean I got my TiAL and my Type-S for a grand total of $376. Geez, you can even get a SS 3" exhaust piping kit from KTeller8's GB for $190 shipped!
Your missing the point, fabbing the stuff isnt that easy. You also have to have access to a welder. The cost of piping runs 100.00-150.00, then another 200.00 at least for fabrication/welding cost. The point is that the drag piping is pre-made no welds. Its worth it for the lack of aggrivation.

i got the drag piping... gave me just as big of headache, as if i would've gone with full custom. and i ended up spray painting the chrome, flat black.

I just bought four 2 1/4"od U bends from JCWhitney, cut them myself, and put it all together with pipe connectors - took about an hour and a half to do the entire setup, and cost about $60

Boosted hybrid, I do understand that the point is that the piping is pre-made. The guy asked for "alternative to Drag 3 thats as good and cheaper", so I gave him an alternative that was good and cheaper - exactly what he asked for. There is nothing wrong with the DRAG piping; it's just that people like me are not willing to shell out that much money just for the pre-fab and over-rated bling factor. But that's just me.
No i agree with you on the cost factor of the piping, it is quite high. I used drag piping for over a year, but i am going custom now. I have to tell you that my piping would never stay on, every day one joint would blow apart. Going custom piping for me means having three pieces of intercooler piping, instead of 5-6 pieces that are connected by connectors and hose clamps. They wouldnt last more than an hour on my car before they come apart.
Thanks you. johnisenglish, was it really that hard? Looks like you didn't have to do any welding.
I used 2.25" radiator Hose from Napa for two of the connectors, but then just decided to use the pipe connectors sold at Home Depot instead, and they seem to work better IMO. I know they're not as snazzy and heat resistant as the Silicone/Nitrile connectors that people use, but they get the job done, and hey - anything for boost
