Default car kinda overheating....any suggestions?

when should the cooling fan come on in my hatch? i'm not sure if its working right or not. the fan works, but i need to know if there's a rely or something that could be bad that makes the fan come on.

the car was starting to overheat and i would have to let it cool down for a while. i don't think the head gasket blew cause there's no water in the oil. i just changed the thermostat also and the car was running fine so far.

the top hose gets real hots and bottom one gets hot every now and then.

any suggestions on what this could be?

maybe your fan switch? or maybe your fan? if your car is warmed up and your fan isn't kickin on, you want to check your fan switch. theres a harness(two wires) that plugs into your fan, unplug that, and jump it. also, theres another switch by your thermostat, unplug that and jump it, if it comes on when you jump it, then it works and your fan switch might be bad. check that first.

we did jump it and the fan turns on. so when should the fan turn on? when your car reaches normal tempature or what? would this be a sign of a bad head gasket?
we'll probably change the water pump also.

im leaning towards bad head gasket. My friend's car had the same prob. Replaced all sorts of stuff, new thermo, radiator cap, hoses, still overheats, turns out it was the headgasket.

the car doesn't overheat at all. it runs fine and everything so i don't think its the head gasket yet.

today my friend noticed that water was leaking from somewhere, when he got under the car to check it out, there's water leaking from the water pump area. do you think the water pump gasket is bad since its leaking water and that explains why he's always having to add water to the radiator? he said it leaked a lot of water when he let it sit in one place for a while.

somebody told me to check plug two and three to see if there's any white stuff on them, my friend did that and there's no white stuff on the plugs.

he's going to replace the water pump this weekend and see what happens.

if it's leaking from there, replace the gasket. this could explain why your fan doesn't come on. when your car is fully warmed up, check to see if your lower radiator hose is warm. if it's warm, that means your thermostat opens, and water is flowing through the engine. if it's not, then either your thermostat is bad, or no pressure to push the water through, so check your water pump.
