I thought d16y8's only came in 96-00 Civic EX's??
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've been told. Anyways, check out this thread and you'll see why I ask.

thats what i thought...i am probably wrong though cuz i am just a noob trying to learn.
I emailed him about it and he said those numbers are on the side of the block, but he also said that he could tell the motor had been out before, so maybe it was swapped in.
They came in the '96-97 del Sol Si as well, but that's irrelevent. The SOHC VTEC engines are a common swap into 4th-gen Civics.
$100obo is strangely cheap for a Y8 though . . .
Is it high mileage or something? I usually see them go for $400-500.

That d16y8 didn't originally come in the 91 crx. I'd look elsewhere. You can probably get one with much lower miles for $500-$750.
Oh christ. Here we go again. BAN obiwankonobee.
EDIT: Wanted to make sure I spelled his name right.

I'm not really worried about the miles, if I get it its not going directly in my car. My plan is to rebuild it, since I'll be in no rush cuz I already have a good runnin' motor in my car. That way I can take my time and get the parts as I can afford them, therefore getting the better stuff. It all sounds good in my head anyway

And here's some help for you:
'93-95 Sol S came with the D15B7, but '96-97 Sol S came with the D16Y7.
'94-95 Sol VTEC came with the B16A3, but '96-97 Sol VTEC came with the B16A2.
So, we have a total of 6 engines:

D16Y7 - '96-97
del Sol Si
D16Z6 - '93-95

Here's something easy.
D16Y8's are 1996 and newer OBDII SOHC VTEC engines. So, if it is in a 91 then the year of the engine should be determined by looking at the head.

Can you tell just by looking at a picture of the motor? The guy is gonna send me some pictures of it. But the head won't be off the motor, its all intact, so what do I need to look for to tell what motor it is?
