I emailed him about it and he said those numbers are on the side of the block, but he also said that he could tell the motor had been out before, so maybe it was swapped in.

 

They came in the '96-97 del Sol Si as well, but that's irrelevent. The SOHC VTEC engines are a common swap into 4th-gen Civics.

$100obo is strangely cheap for a Y8 though . . . Is it high mileage or something? I usually see them go for $400-500.

 

He said it has 150,000 miles on it. I thought it was kind of cheap too, that's why I was a little skeptical.

 

Do yourself a real favor and purchase a Mustang.

 

That d16y8 didn't originally come in the 91 crx. I'd look elsewhere. You can probably get one with much lower miles for $500-$750.

d16y8's also cam in 93-97 del sol si's (not including the special edition that came with a b16a) but thats all. (as far i know)

 

I'm not really worried about the miles, if I get it its not going directly in my car. My plan is to rebuild it, since I'll be in no rush cuz I already have a good runnin' motor in my car. That way I can take my time and get the parts as I can afford them, therefore getting the better stuff. It all sounds good in my head anyway

umm didnt del sol si's come with b16's

 

del sol s's came with the (96-97 I believe)d16y7 as well as (early model d's I believe came with the )d15.. del sol SI's came with a d16z6 then switched to the 96-97..d16y8... del sol vtecs came with B16A3s

It is. SOHC VTEC.

No. The SOHC VTEC Sol is the Sol Si, and the DOHC VTEC is the Sol VTEC.

 

Here's some help for you guys

93-97 del Sol S came with d15pos
93-95 del Sol Si came with d16z6
96-97 del Sol Si came with d16y8
And of course the del Sol VTEC came with the b16a3

 

And here's some help for you:

'93-95 Sol S came with the D15B7, but '96-97 Sol S came with the D16Y7.
'94-95 Sol VTEC came with the B16A3, but '96-97 Sol VTEC came with the B16A2.

So, we have a total of 6 engines:

del Sol S
D15B7 - '93-95
D16Y7 - '96-97

del Sol Si
D16Z6 - '93-95
D16Y8 - '96-97

del Sol VTEC
B16A3 - '94-95
B16A2 - '96-97

Here's something easy.

D16Y8's are 1996 and newer OBDII SOHC VTEC engines. So, if it is in a 91 then the year of the engine should be determined by looking at the head.

 

Can you tell just by looking at a picture of the motor? The guy is gonna send me some pictures of it. But the head won't be off the motor, its all intact, so what do I need to look for to tell what motor it is?

 

It's obviously been swapped into that car from another.

That is a good deal even if it needs some work.

 

Y8's sure as hell....they have pretty large Intake Manifolds.
