Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic vs. Castrol 5W30 full synthetic
I have tried both brands of oil and have noticed that the castrol one doesnt burn as fast, meaning that every couple off weeks I'd have to add extra motor oil. with the mobil 1 it seems that I have to constantly add oil to the motor.
The castrol synthetic doesnt look as clear as the mobil one does anyhow.
for some reason I usually stick with mobil 1 but since pep boys didnt have mobil 1 I went with the castrol brand instead...
Guys have you compared other brands to mobil 1?

I went an even different route with agip by advice from a good friend, and dont lose nearly any even at the track now.

My ITR had done 120,000 kms (ie end of warranty) - before I swapped from the OEM Honda FEO mineral oil (10w-30) to Castrol 'Formula R' synthetic oil (5w-30).
I just ticked over 125,000 kms and I'm happy to report that the Castrol has not required any top ups until the weekend just past.... where I did a 'fast' mountain drive, which kept the car in VTEC (between 6-9K rpms) for several hours over the warm day!!

The colour of the oil is still quite 'golden' - which is pretty good, considering its the first change since swapping from the mineral Honda oil - and my friends driving behind, don't report me blowing any smoke (even under constant high revs).
Price wise, here in Australia the Castrol costs AU$50 for 5 Lts vs. $80 for the Mobil 1.... so I know which one I'd rather be replacing more often and I don't believe there would be a 'noticable' difference between them to justify!?

Nice topic.. I've been thinking about trying the castrol synthetic 5w30 rather than mobil1.
Does anyone know if the engine protection is any better? Or anything really?

Castrol GTX dyno is great stuff.
Castrol Synthetic....from what I'm reading Mobil 1 is still a better blend.

regular castrol gtx is all my motor sees and ever will see. can justify the extra money for synthetic and my motor is doing just fine
Castrol Syntec 5w30 is alot thinner at 100*c compared to M1 5w30, maybe your engine feels more free with the thinner 30 weight in the sump. Doughtful that you would be able to feel it on the butt dyno, but anything is possible.

Mobil 1 is notorious for burning off. I don't use synthetic in any of my cars. Castrol GTX has worked great for me. I use that stuff for my track cars as well as just my daily drivers.
I think M1 is on sale at Costco for like $23 for 6 quarts.
I know Castrol Edge Ti is on sale at Advance Auto for $25.99 (after $7 mail in) with a K&N oil filter. That's a pretty smokin deal.

I have the same issue in my daily driver TL, for some reason Mobil1 just likes to burn off.... must have a different property to it... castrol FTW
You can look up the oil specs on the oil websites. The CST at both 100C and 40C should be there. I don't know if Castrol really is thinner (or which of the 10 different castrol 5w30's they are talking about), but I do know every 5w30 has a slightly different viscosity at 100C.
