Default b18a1 swap

i searched and didn't really find much...
i've ran accross a fairly cheap re-built on 50,000km(im in canada)
i was just wondering if there worth swaping or should i just hold onto my money for the b16a1...
my beef with the b16a1 is the torque... theres not enough...
i can't get a b18c1 or c5 because there is WAY too high of a demand here in BC...
correct me if im wrong but the b18a1 has 130HPish?.. and 121ftlbs torque.
ideas? suggestions?

THNX!

an LS in an 88-91 SI is VERY easy compared to other swaps. no wiring is needed. just get the complete motor, ecu, cable tranny, axles, shift linkage, and mounts. later on you could and go ls/vtec.

the b18a is 142hp, 126ft/lbs torque
the b16a is 160hp, 111ft/lbs torque

you will need to use a cable tranny, unless you want to convert to hydrolic(not recommended)

if your into drag racing period go with the LS. you can make it go fast for a very resonable prices.. turbo/nitrous .. much cheaper that all motor although not as fun and not a respected as all motor.

If I were strictly into drag racing, I would get a B16A. More top end. B18 is great for the street, but just doesn't have the top end rush of the B16.

whats up with all this top end drag talk, last time i check dragsters were torque ****** all on the bottom end, its not like hes going a long distance so isn't a higher displacement end more suited for the short travel?

I wouldn't skimp on mounts, go with hasport. Try to find a used set if u need to get them cheaper. I prefer an b18 over b16 because of the torque factor, price, and overall compatibility with so many different applications. ie forced induction or LS/VTEC or both .

I didn't really want to skimp, but a few people I have been talking to are trying to get me to spend a grand on mounts. How much do hasports run roughly(Canadian price)

I prefer the B16A. About a year ago, I actually had both a B18B HB and B16A CRX. The two cars were of about similar weight. But there was no question about it. The B16A was WAYYY faster. As for torque, that 'great LS torque' is more myth than reality. The truth of the matter is that the taller gearing of the LS transmission eats up most of the difference in first gear. And as you go up in the gears, you lose progressively more torque. So by fifth gear, it is not pulling nearly as hard as a B16A/S1. And since the LS is a low RPM motor, using a B16A transmission on an LS would be VERY bad for reliability. Overall, the LS motor was .3-.5 second slower in the quarter mile than the B16A. My suggestion: Go B16A. Or if you REALLY want torque and can't afford one of the B18C motors, go B20.

I agree, all you guys keep talking this bs about top-end power for drag....drag is all about the launch and torque pull to get you up the 1320....besides what do you think the aftermarket cam profiles for vtec motors are doing anyways?! giving them more torque since they dont have any!

you answered your own question to why the torque was a myth!.....you have too tall of a gear ratio, put a vtec tranny on the LS and those short gears will wake the motor up like it got 2 doses of viagra.

Enough said. I've had both. B16a hands down. But if you can get a decent LS motor cheap, then go for it.

Again, the tranny is the only thing really giving it an edge, mate a ls with a b16 tranny and its close, what are some of you guys b16 times that are so fast I mean stock ones, or fairly stock since we are talking about a guy getting a new swap so I am assuming it will be stock vs stock. When I ran 14.5 at the track there was a handful of b16 crx's I beat them all.

Well, depends what type of drag racing you're talking about. I'm referring to the quarter mile. In the eigth mile, yes, the LS would probably win, but the B16 usually pulls away in 3rd, or right at the end of the track in the quarter.

Sure you can use stock mounts but it reqiures cutting and welding, I dont recomend it. I have seen it done, just buy a mount kit.
