Default OT: Make sure your EGR valve is good!

Or this could happen to you, maybe:

Yep, that's a blown out crank seal on Bef's '96 Tore-***. 132k miles, CEL has been on for probably the past 30k. Her dad's words, "Well, if it runs fine, don't worry about it."

CEL was for a clogged/low flow EGR valve. I *think* that's what popped the seal, since it's pushed out like that.

Not as bad to fix as I thought, 2 hours labor and a $19 seal. Got to see what her pops wants to do about it.

Pat, who thinks Fords suck

Im the 1st inline to agree with you that FORD is crap, BUT thier was a warning sign for 30,000 miles so the BLAME really has to go to the owner! A RARE case where a FORD automobile gives a warning its about to BLOW!

Oh I agree - we should have looked at this a LONG time ago. But Bef's dad is not one to do preventative maintenance, he's more of a "wait until it breaks, then fix it" kind of guy.

I talked to him before I discovered the blown seal, and he had replaced the EGR valve probably 40k miles ago, before Bef started driving the Tore-***. CEL came back on within a month. And they cost about $60 each, so he probably was just hoping the problem would go away.

Going to look at the Haynes when Bef gets home and see if I can do it myself. Otherwise, off to the stealership it goes before we end up with a Valdez on our hands.

[edit] SgT, what happens to a Honda when the EGR plugs up? I know old Volvos will pop like Bef's car did. [/edit]

I'm a little confused. What does the egr valve have to do with your seal popping out? IMO you better start looking elsewhere.

Plugged pcv or crankcase breather maybe?

Louie~ who by no means is a FORD expert.

emissions? hehehe

EGR - GONE AND BLOCKED OFF
ACV - GONE AND BLOCKED OFF
CATS - 3'' STRAIGHT PIPE IN THEIR PLACE
AIRPUMP - REMOVED

and to all law enforcement officials that may be reading this by GONE I of course mean there and fully functioning

Soooo why do Preludes, Accords, and Civic HX and VXs have EGR valves and Integras do not?

Egr equals...exhaust gas recirculation. So basically the egr valve re-directs calculated amounts exhaust gas back into the intake as part of the air/fuel mixture. This lowers combustion temps and has the effect of decreasing displacement. Spark not as hot/violent.

Reason why integras/preludes (vtec) don't have an egr valve is because they use cam overlap to introduce the inert gas.
