exhaust mani question...
so i am looking for cheap ways to get my POS moving faster. i got a good price on a 99 y8 exhaust mani. i have a 00 y7 and i was wondering if this would work? i have heard of clearance problems? i want to go y8 exhaust mani, carsound cat, 2 1/4 back. i am pretty sure i have the whole o2 sensor thing down...and YES i searched first before posting this. thanks in advance.
I would work but you would have to relocate but you will have to mess around with your engine harness in order to plug in the secondary oxygen sensor...(that's not that hard tho) As for performance I don't know that you are going to notice a whole hell of a lot, yes the Y7 header is more restrictive because of the header mounted catalytic converter but the Y8 is nothing special... If you go with an aftermarket cat or test pipe with the Y8 you might feel a bit but like i said, nothing dramatic... I personally feel that the thing that slows down the Y7 the most is the tranny... I don't work on SOHC's that much but the Y7 has long gears just as the Teg LS. I know you would notice a difference swapping the Z6/Y8 tranny and you wouldn't have the same problems that an B16 tranny has on an LS.. With that setup you can see the problem (a B16 tranny is meant to be reved to ~8000 and hold the car in VTEC, an LS motor has a ~6800 cut off which kind of makes the B16 gears too short) Your rev limit and the Z6/Y8 are pretty close so you won't have as bad of a problem.... This is kind of a lot of work to be putting into your single cam but like I said I feel it's what would do the most help... If you're ever looking for a simple swap why not just drop a B18A/B or B16A.. Yes they do cost a bit more but you'll have a motor with a lot more potential... Hope this helps... Peace
thanks man. i have heard that the y8 tranny is better but i am not really sure why...would having that tranny let me rev higher? i thought that comes from the engine itself. i don't have a tach right now(eeerg!) but it feels like the gears i have now are VERY short. but i don't know much about trannies anyway. if i were to go to aftermarket header...would i get the one to fit a DX or a EX? i do not have a head swap...i still have y7 head.

The Y8 tranny has slightly SHORTER gearing which is the opposite of what you have now YOUR GEARING RIGHT NOW IS VERY LONG .... Like I said the shorter gearing just makes the car feel as though it drives a lot smoother... It won't take as much to get moving however you will eventually top out sooner... I really wouldn't worry about that tho since your car right now is easily drag limited at ~120mph and you should be able to do that in the end of 3rd-4th gear... Your shift points on your car with the DX tranny (right now) are probably something like 42mph, 73mph, and then 115mph (so i guess you couldn't do 120 in 3rd...) (Again these are just off the top of my head so I'm not positive) With the EX (Y8) gearing you would have gears more of a normal car being slightly cut down because of the rev limit (Like is said before tho the difference between the DX rev limit and that of the EX aren't that much so you won't have any problems) Your gears would be something close to the standard 35mph, 60mph, 90mph, 120mph, and I'm pretty sure that you aren't going to have the power to get you to top out 5th gear, not that you would want to do that anyways... If you get a tach for your car i would just get a CTR cluster, 99-2000 Si, or an EX/LX...... I dunno that's just my opinion, I hate aftermarket tachs but yea that's just me... As for an aftermarket header, I'm pretty sure you would want to get it for the DX/LX since it would be setup for the front mounted primary and secondary oxygen sensors.... (They may be the same, but i'm just not sure) Like I said before about this.. I don't know a whole lot about D series world... I work on B series motors probably ~99% of the time.... Good Luck
thank you very much...now i have a much better understanding of trannies. as for the whole header thing...i thought my cx is the only one with the cat right off the head? that is why if i decide to go with the ex header(or any other) i would have to extend the wiring for the 1st o2 sensor. i wish i knew someone with a stock ex so i could get a look at the setup. hey...anyone have PICS of this? that would help. i am ready to go to the honda dealer up the street and ask them to pop the hood on one?!?!?
You are correct the CX/DX (D16Y7) run the catalytic converter on the header, right before the cat. on the header you'll have the primary oxygen sensor and the one located down below on the front side would be the secondary... That's the one that has to be moved the farthest... On an EX there is only one O2 on the header as you probably know and the other one is located after the catalytic on the cat back near the shift linkage... As for the primary I'm pretty sure that you will have to extend the wires since the EX primary is mounted in the header directly under the intake manifold.. (you'll have to double check me again on this one but i'm fairly sure that I am right) HOpe this helps.. Peace
