Transmission problems after D16Y8 swap into CRX
Hi guys, I swapped in a D16Y8 using a 1990 CRX SI transmission into my 1989 CRX DX.
Everything runs great except th following:
From a standstill, when I depress the clutch and try to put it in gear, it is extremely difficult. I can only get it into 2nd with no grind or into reverse with a grind. Once it gets into one of the two though, it shifts silk smooth into all the gears untill I come to a full stop and re-engage the clutch.
SO basicaly, it seems that I have to stop the intermediate shafts (layshaft) from spinning to put it into gear from a standstill, it is extremely difficlut to select the gears the first time and then it becomes ok. So example, to put it into 1st, I have to first throw it into 2nd and then 1st goes in silk smooth.
The clutch and pressure plate are both aftermarket, don't know the brands (bought slightly used) but the PP is a stiffer unit, they are both in excellent condition, the clutch cable is set to maximum stiff...
What do you guys think it could be?
I might have to pull the tranny again, need some ideas.
Thanks in advance.

Id take the tranny off and give it a good look. Perhaps things just arent lined up. But that really dosent explain why its hard to get it into first. Perhaps that tranny was dumped alot going into first? Thats why its hard to get it into first from N but easy from 2nd. I dont know much about trannys so thats just my crazy guess.

I had kinda the same problem, when the car was off it would go into gear no problem but when the car was running it would not go in for ****, but once I got in gear the clutch worked perfect I.E driving forward. Well all I did was loosen the clutch cable up real loose then everything work perfect so I then tightend the clutch cable back to how I had it to begin with and It still work perfect. Its kinda weird that all I had to do to fix the problem was just loosen then tighten the cable, but it worked, give it a shot. Just loosen the clutch up really loose and see if it works like that, then if it dose start to tighten it little by until your back to the original slackness (if thats a word) Let me know what happens

I will try that today and get back to you, at this point, I am out of ideas and would try anything to avoid pulling the tranny back down.
Thanks

Just oen guestion... did you refill the tranny with fluid? When you put the tranny on did you use a clutch alignment too>? or a deep 10mm socket with some electrical tape around it? also make sure your shiftlinkage is not bent or twisted.. and the bolts are all tight on it

Yup, all those things were done. The fluid was low after the first fill right after the swap so we added more and its now good.
I wonder what else it could be, any why 2nd gear seams to go in easiest of them all...
Thanks.

The problem is that your clutch is not fully disengaging. It might be a warped disk, a bad pressure plate or even a bad cut on the fly wheel. The reason it grinds in first and reverse is the shafts are still turning when you depress the clutch. The reason it doesn't do it when you are rolling is because of the syncro's. Take all the slack out of the cable and then keep tighting it past that point. If it goes away and if you can live with that go for it. The other solution is to trash the used clutch parts, buy a match set, and regrind the flywheel properly. Good luck!
Thanks for the help. We are almost 99% sure now that it is the aftermakert clutch and PP. However, it seems to be getting better, maybe the clutch disc is wearing down a little... I am going to wait it out and as long as it doesn't get worse, it's fine, I paid like $40 US for both clutch and PP that had 600 miles on it.
It's probably not perfectly to spec... Will wait and see.
Thanks again.
