Default EK Coupe Mileage

Hey peeps-
Just bought a 96 EX coupe for wifey.. ATX but she drives it, not I. Anyways, we're pullin real bad gas mileage. Like 200 to a tank.. Bone stock motor/fueling wise so far.. Whats up?

I'm not throwin a check engine code.. Where would you guys start?

I'm thinking 02 and plugs/wires and fuel filter..

What else? Anyway to pull the codes on a 96? Thanks for any help! J

i have a similiar problem with my 98 ex, the fuel milegae is pretty shitty. Im getting low 20ish MPG half and half with city and freeway driving. The best i ever did was 30MPG crusing on the freeway from vegas to cali.

I'm surprised they dont get better mileage.. I was under the impression that it would get closer to 30..

I thought my 94 Coupe EX got closer to 30 but I guess now I'm questioning. I'll do the routine checks and get back at ya'll with what I figure out.

Thanks for the help so far.. Any more info would be greatly appreciated! J

They do, if a normal person is driving.....average shifts in a Civic should be at 3500....and that's high. That's how they base it.

When I first bought my 98 EX (auto too!), it got around 27mpg/city, 35/hwy. The most mods I had on the D16y8 was Intake/catback. But the intake I re-used from my old Civic, which had about 50k miles on the filter. I was disappointed in the gas mileage, but attributed it to the car being an auto and I would rag the **** out of it. (Wanted a new motor ) So I changed the cone filter to a new K/N and my mileage skyrocketed! Plus, it pulled much easier as compared to the "clogged" filter.

Also, what weight oil do you use? 5w30 Mobil One owns. 10w weight is just too thick for the small D16. Definitely do a tuneup, change sparkplugs, replace dist cap if necessary. And are you running aftermarket rims? (Heavier?) That can affect mileage.

Check your brakes too.
I had new brake pads put on my 96 EX and the place that did it didn't bother to realign the caliper so my brakes rubbed on a 1500 mile trip to Colorado. I had to fill up at 200 miles everytime I got gas, I assumed it was the fact that I had three people in the car, two bikes on the roof, and luggage for everyone weighing the car down. Once I got to Colorado my brakes finally started making noises. It messed up my calipers and ended up costing me $600 to fix.
This was before I knew anything about cars but I have educated myself since then.

Thanks for the help everyone.. I took it out myself last night for about 85 miles. The mileage is not that great, but I guess not that bad either. It sure beats my turbo Probe (255lph, 12:1 fmu)..

I am going to take a look at it this Sunday night. I have a pretty good list of things- some that I had in mind, some that I didn't (brakes)..

I'm suspsecting a nice tune up will net me a decent gain.. Would I pull a CEL if my O2 was even partially going? I'm not familiar with the OBDII on the EK's..

And by the way, this is almost all normal driving- there is nothing spirited about the D16Y with an ATX attached to it!
