Default bumping harder w/ radio vs. CD ? ? ?

my car noticably bumps harder with the radio on vs. when i play a CD.
i currently have a alpine 7894, a JL 500/1 monoblock amp, and a
10W7 in a sealed box in the back of my 2000 two door gsr.

my friend said it's because radio's put boosts or something in the
airwaves/signals? my head unit has 4v outputs...
if i got an eclipse deck with 8v or 16v outputs would it bump harder?

LOL. I remember an argument 10 years ago with a friend about rather tapes or cds had better bass. I used to think tapes were better.

CD has better bass extension, accuracy and less distortion than the radio. Bass from the radio does not sound good in comparison to the same song on cd. Turn off all of your processing(loudness, flat eq) and compare, you will see the difference.

BTW, how do you like you W7?

that is wierd.. I have an Alpine head units w/ 4V pre-outs also and my CD (from both the head units CD mechanism and also the 12 disc changer) is louder than the radio.. maybe its my antenna/weak signal for the radio or something.. but hte CD is clearer and louder...

have you tried different cd's? maybe the station your listening to boosts some frequencies or something..

maybe there is less distortion..but dayam it sounds good louder LOL...
the W7 is great...very accurate all all levels...
except i have a sealed box and it's a 10W7...
i'd like to hit the lower notes harder in some rap tracks...
so honestly...i want more lol..but really it's freakin great...
everyone who goes in my car is like "you got two 12's?"
i'm thinking of getting an IDMAX sub from this one dood selling it for like
250 or 280 or somethin..it's the 12 inch one that's 1000 watts rms

I don't know about that. The alpines will not hit 4v on radio. From memory I think it will barely hit 2. Because of this cd will be louder than radio for that HU. On my HU FM is pretty clear, but the level does seem lower.

You have a one track mind

With a pair of 15's and 2k watts, you can bump off anything

I need subs

In response to your question, no. Personally I listen to just about everything rap,r&b,rock, pop, reggae. I like balance, but when I listen to rap I love a good bass hit so I never go smaller than a single 12, preferably a 15.

I remember hearing a while back that radio stations do funky things with the eq settings. This might explain the boominess, but it sounds funky too almost muddy.

EVOL: That W7 would sound much better with a more powerful amp/box. I guarantee it. (Please don't put an ID MAX on that little amp... )

well i chose a sealed box because i don't have much trunk room after the sub
and box are in there. the amp is 500 watts rms...and the sub is 500 watts rms..
i was lookin at JL 1000/1 amps on ebay...saw some decent prices.

JL amps and decent prices don't belong in the same sentence. (they are coming out with new "budget" amps) Either way, in small sealed applications power requirements/handling increase to a degree. I also didn't know that that rms was that low, so you might be reaching xmax.

Edit: checked out your album... Are you a pimp?

JL and budget

What about 13w7 in a sealed box with a 1000/1

top_shotta: He is a pimp There are a couple of import models in there that I recognize Christiine Mendoza and Rachelle.

lol am i a pimp hahhahah...naw they pimp me lol...
anyways...i WAS thinking of just getting a 13W7...
but in a sealed box from jl it retails for like over a grand...
if i get it by itself i'll have to get someone to make a box..
and someone to install it *it's a b*tch to mount the W7 sub*
so if i go with a W7...might as well get it preloaded into their
sealed box...

i can get a brand new w/warranty 12" IDMAX sub which is also 1000
watts rms for like 290...and even a hardcore obcon ported box
is like 270 from sounddomain if i really wanna get a die hard box...
so that's still about half of what i'd get the JL for...and the IDMAX is
very comparable to the W7 from what i have gathered from
people on this board, on http://www.caraudioforum.com, and
http://www.elitecaraudio.com

Another alternative is the Adire Brahma. Not a big name yet, but they're getting there. AdireAudio.com $369 for the 12"

yah looked into those too..but supposedly an inefficient sub.
i was JUST reading on elitecaraudio.com how some guy used a 12 inch
brahma and a 12 inch IDMAX sub in the same setup..and had to turn
the bass boost up on his amp w/ the brahma to equal what the IDMAX
was putting out.

FM stations boost the bass on music before it gets tranmitted.

Right. There's a couple things on top of that, (temper this with my ghetto methodology and terminology of audio mastering)

1.) Most CD's aren't mastered at their maximum sound threshold. Most try to use the available data stream to provide a wider, "truer", sound.

2.) radio mixes are generally filtered and compressed, so that a lot of the extranious "noise" is cleaned up. You end up with a 'cleaner' sound, which then allows them to master the song at a greater volume without clipping.

The W7 is in a league of its own, nothing that I've heard can touch it. The IDMAX and the Brahma come damn close though... ( I've always wanted to hear one of those servo controlled Velodynes too)

Check out TeamAMP.com they host Adire's forums.

Edit:EVOL: Can you get anymore IDMAX's at that price?

Check the output/gain settings on your HU. My old Kenwood allows me different treble/bass/gains for FM or CD.

naw dood if i had to do it all over again...
i woulda spent a lil more and got an eclipse deck
with a 6 or 8 or 12 disc CD changer.
better sound quality and having alot more SPL
is soo much worth it...rather than flipping through
100 + songs on one CD. sure, you can make different
folders..but i'd rather get a CD changer and bump harder.
that's probably what i'm gonna do now, actually.

like i said, when it plays the MP3's as a data file, it doesn't play as loud.
you either have to convert songs into a wav file or play a regular CD
if u wanna bump louder. you can't turn the volume as high when playing
MP3's unconverted to a wav file. it will distort.

tell yah what, buy an mp3 head unit, burn like 100 plus songs on a CD as
data, your mp3 head unit will read it and play it, then play the radio and
a regular CD afterwards, or even a burned CD with wav files on it, and
then find out for yourself that MP3 files don't bump as hard.
