Mini-me tuning......
Okay kids, here's the setup that I am going to run......
port n polished d16y8 head/port-matched IM, stock d16a6 bottom end, d16a6 dizzy/tb/injectors. What is my best option for tuning? No way in hell am I using an rpm switch, so thats out. I want to use the Zdyne 1-wire, but i would have to send away my stock d16a6 ecu to get remapped and have the VTEC engagement added - my only beef with that is that I wont be able to mess with the vtec activation, air/fuel ratio once it is set (right?). There is also the Zdyne gold Secu but that costs a chunk of change but it is fully tunable. There is also the Fields/Apex VAFC, but Im not sure what all I need to get that running and I heard it is a biyotch to tune right. Any help? What is everyone else running and how do you like it? Thanks for taking the time to read and answer....!

1-wire + Field SFC + dyno or just the Field SFC + dyno. You really want to have the ability to tune the setup rather than be locked into whatever maps are on the ECU, and with any non-factory "creation"
you should ensure that the fuel curve doesn't have any overly rich or lean spots in it (wideband O2).
EDIT: The 1-wire setup is probably the better idea because of the revised ignition maps (at least the impression from the website is that the maps are revised), although I don't think the two are radically different.

Yeah, that was my beef with the whole 1-wire setup was that I would be locked into whatever maps Zdyne put on the ECU. In the future I plan on adding a new cam, valvetrain goods, etc..., so I would probably end up getting a Fields/VAFC anyways. On that note, arent VAFC hacks hard to program? I heard that if you dont tune them properly you will notice a huge decrease in power. Anyone have comments on either setup?
EDIT: Im kinda poor, so I cant have my cake and eat it too at this point

If my name was Spade i would be getting mad love right now.....
Goes back to read the rest of the post before editing.
EDIT: Cheap way. MSD rpm activated module hooked up to your VTEC soleniod.
Good way. Hondata. 275 dollars for the bottom of the line but, it's tunable!
EDIT again: OR get a VTEC ECU.

Hondata doesnt work with obd0 though, right? I'm trying to keep it as simple and inexpensive as possible without sacrificing quality. If Hondata works with obd0 then Im sold. THe ONLY thing stopping me from going with Zdyne is the lack of tunability. Since I am most likely going to add performance-enhancing mods down the road, would I be best off with a VAFC? Or should I get Zdyne now and get a VAFC later? Im getting dizzy....
Off-hand....what OBD0 ecu's are VTEC? And, would it be more involved than plugging in the new ECU and hooking up the vafc? I know I need to hook up to the vtec solenoid, but other than that....? Thanks...
if it were me I'd just use a vtec ecu, there are no non-obd sohc vtec ecus so if you did this there would be wiring changes and I'm questioning the compatability of you dizzy/fuel parts. then I'd get a v-afc and put it on the dyno.
No dyno's in my area that I know of.
Im thinking of using the obd2 dizzy now because I have the y8 fuel rail, injectors, etc.. Wiring is a bitch tho....

your best bet is OBD1 conversion.....you said you already have a y8 dizzy....so all you need is a conversion harness ($150) or make your own, 4 wire o2, and a p28
your car will run best on that setup especially since you dont have access to a dyno.
Hondata will require that conversion to work.
If you dont like that route then get a VAFC and youll be doing a lot of *** dynoing i guess..lol

currently i have an almost identical setup to yours
Get a B&M FPR and any adj cam gear those will be a must for mini me tuning
For vtec activation im using a toggle switch (yes i know thats not good bla bla) but it works for now. I use to have a fields vtec controller but those are garbage. Currently Im in the process of OBD1 conversion.
You shouldnt worry too much about getting zdyne or hondata until you get serious into the motor
Stock A6 ecu with toggle works fine for me... i pick my own activation...ive been using the switch for over a year, never burnt out the silenoid. Ive had it on the dyno and theres no lean condition while in vtec.
To get the car going get the cam gear and fpr and you can *** tune it...msd is fine for vtec activation ....VAFC needs a dyno for it to be worth it
