92 Accord - Timing Belt Change - Need A "How-To" Guide
I need to do this soon. My Accord is just over 90k miles.
You can help me out one of a few ways:
1. Link to a website that details the work
2. Fax me a copy of the steps from a service manual (email me at hankdanford@hotmail.com and we'll arrange something)
3. Sell me your service manual :D
When I say service manual, I'm referring to a Honda manual...not a Haynes or Chiltons. Those things suck (unless somebody has used one or the other for this job and had good luck with it...I know I haven't on anything in the past on other vehicles!)
I should do all of the following:
belt
water pump
oil seals
tensioner?
Correct?
Where's the best place to buy the parts? Cheap, but not crap parts...
I'm mechanically inclined, but I'm 4 cyl and front-wheel drive stupid :D I did my axles and they turned out easy enough. I need to do this myself to save some money to buy aftermarket parts for my WS6 :D
Thanks in advance!

I usually get factory parts to save on headaches but I believe you can buy the same belt somewher else I'll try to find a link. Also I'll see if I can scan those pages for you tomorrow at work if I get a chance.
If you had bought me a digi cam 2 weeks ago when I did mine, I'd have taken pix for you.
If the cheapass disposable cam that I bought to take pix with had actually worked well enough to get a pic of something other than the color black, I'd have put a how2 up already
spend the extra money and get the Honda parts. for starters, the honda belt is good for 90k (the new ones 105k) while the autoparts store one is only good for 60k. that difference alone is worth the price IMHO. Do the water pump at the same time, it's only 5 bolts more. and do the balancer belt at the same time as well, you have to take it off to get to the timing belt. I also replaced the tensioner springs. they were probably a total of $3 so there are cheap insurance in my mind. I plan on keeping the car forever so I'm willing to spend a little bit more on the maintenence. if your planing on getting rid of it soon, take my advice with a grain of salt and save money where you think it makes sense. I got everything, and I mean everything, for about $125 shipped from http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com I've bought stuff from them a few times and they are great. I don't know if that is a good price estimate for you since your car has a different motor than mine (f23 vs f22)
It's not difficult, but you have to be very careful when you put it back together. you don't want the belt to be off by a tooth. If you are mechanically inclined and you have the Helms, you should have no problem DIY.
good luck with the crank pully bolt though, You really do need the special tool.

and the dont ban me bitch guy is the same one who had about 500 posts last week about the s2k starter button.

Thanks for the tips man! I plan on keeping the car, so I'll definitely go with the 105k mi belt. Is my engine an F22 or F23?
If nobody can hook me up with copies from their Helmes, where's the cheapest place to buy a Helmes for my car? I don't really want to spend over $100 on a manual, but it might be the best thing to do in the long run...
The best quote I've got so far for everything is about $600 installed...$150 of that is parts and the rest is labor. That's why I'm doing it myself...
Thanks,

I found my manual for that year and it's a Haynes.
Let me know if you still want the pages out of it. Not the greatest pics, etc but the torque specs are the same, etc. If nobody else helps you out let me know.

the prices in st paul/minneapolis range from 640 to 780. brookdale is the cheapest.
they will replace every single comsumable part in the process

the F23 is in the 98 - 02 accord, the 90 - 97 accords all have some flavor of F22
I see you have a 92, so I'll say this about the service interval: the 98+(and maybe the 96+, not certain on them) accords all have a 105k interval for the timing belt. I know the older ones have a 90k interval. wether honda changed it's belt construction, or there is some other reason why the newer motors have the longer interval I can't say. maybe somebody else can add to this...
the only 2 places you can get the helms manual are either the dealer parts counter or http://www.helminc.com mine was about $70 shipped from the website. If you're keeping the car, just buy it. you'll save $70 on labor the first time you use it. I can't tell you how nice a manual it is

Thanks everybody...I went ahead and ordered the Helmes for $70 shipped. I thought it was going to cost more than that because the Helmes for my TA was a little over $100
I'll probably have some questions when I get around to doing this (probably in about 3 wks) so I'll be back :D
Thanks!

so really hard
other than that, I'm not sure you could make a chain that would fit onto the existing gear teeth. that means youd have to get a new cam gear, crank gear, water pump gear, as well as a new tensioner device.
My GFs 02 spec-v has a timing chain and no recomended change interval for it. I won't say it will never break, anything can break, but obviously nissan seems to think it will outlive the car. They will stretch over time
what it comes down to is price. belts=cheaper production for honda=high profit margins+ stealerships make a killing replacing belts.
timing belts do not suffer from inherent stretching that chains do. by having a belt that is replaceable, your timing will remain fairly constant
I just did waterpump, timing belt and balance shaft belt. I used a Haynes manual and had no problems. Plan on about 4 hours. I cleaned everything as I went and it took a little longer. If you have a helper it might be done in less time.
Can I save considerable money buying online? I don't want to get crap parts though...
Timing Belt
Tensioner
Balance Shaft Belt
Water Pump
What about oil seals?
Thanks!
