nut on alternator...how to remove?
I was needing to remove the nut holding the alternator pulley on but since it spins with the pulley how is it removed?Does it come off the opposite direction?require a special tool? Please let me know.
why are you removing it?
if your just trying to get the belt off loosen the upper bolt and hit the alternator with a rubber mallet.
putting that nut back on is almost impossible because the alternator spins so freely.
its not reverse threaded.

ur best luck its to take the alt off and take it to a shop that might be friendly enough to loosen that for you...
remember u need to replace alt pulle ywith same size pulley....
if that alt was in a wreck , u better getting a brand new one from pepboys or autozone for 95 and having lifetime warranty.... and u dont have to go tru all this hassle
or get a hold tru the yellow pages of alt repair places.. they wil loosen it with their special tool

I am actually removing it because the pulley that is on there was bent in an accident from the previous car the motor was in.
they work great for **** like that

I work at Autozone and they have an electric impact and will do it for you. THey're all about customer satisfaction. Some alternators come with one style pulley while the one required for it is a different style....so thats why they have em. I use it all the time as well for my own purposes in the parking lot.....I bring an extension cord!

If you're replacing the pulley than just use a big Lock Jaw Plier and grab onto it and use a breaker bar to break it off.....have a friend hold onto the LJ plier. This is if you don't have access to air tools. If you have access to air tools then just impact it off.
I wouldn't recommend the first method with the Plier if you're going to reuse the pulley for it will damage the pulley.

If it got hit hard enough to bend the pulley, why are you trusting that the alternator shaft or bearings haven't been dmaged also? I think I would chuck the whole thing....
