a b16 or a d16?

Could be that its not hooked up right if it dosent work at all. Usually when your ignitor goes bad the tach bounces..

what motor? b16, d16a6, or ZC? It may be your VSS (vehicle speed sensor). The ones that came with the b16s are electronic, not cable.

Accually 88-91 had the VSS in the gauge cluster. 92+ have the VSS mounted on the Tranny. I would bet its in the cluster blue plug or somwhere inbetween there and the Diz. Its just 1 wire that runs from the blue wire in the diz to the blue plug in the cluster

It was a 1.6 16v D16a6 and is replaced by the same D16a6. Where is that sensor located?

What sensor? The VSS is in the speedo plug in the cluster. Now the signal wire for the tach is on the ignitor inside the diz its a single blue wire that goes into a round 2 prong plug. Its on the - side of the coil. I believe the other wire is black/yellow. I runs into the harness and plugs into the backside of the guage cluster VIA a blue plug. Its a blue wire the entire length.

Well with your motor the cam sensor is inside the distributor, you have to take the diz cap off and it will be right there. The coil with the - termanal to the tach is on the coil pack. I will have a black/yellow wire and a blue wire. The blue wire runs inside the car to the backside of the gauge cluster. I would suspect that is the problem first. Just check it and make sure that everything is good and tight. Take a multimeter and make sure no resistance in the wire. Also check the round plug and make sure its connected good.
