Main Shaft Bearing Transplant (Si to Si)
I have the PDF Shop Manual and another manual (non helms), neither of them have in depth tranny views. Basiclly we're mid swap and have two trannys:
1. Runs Flawless but has bad mainshaft bearing Noise when foot is off the clutch in neutral, noisy decelleration in 2nd and 1rst
2. Sucks horribly, grinds, slips out
We want to take the mainshaft bearing out of number 2 and put it in number 1. Does anyone have a short outline of what to do because our manuals have nothing to help. Anything to look out for? I read that post on how to fix tranny grinds with the great diagrams, those are the ONLY pictures I've seen of an inside of a tranny.

Hmm I'm very indecisive as to if we should even mess with the only tranny we have the works well. How hard is the main shaft bearing, I've done everything else on the car (numerous swaps) just never had to open a trans.
I rebuilt mine, it seemed about equal in dificulty as rebuilding an engine, but my shop is right next door to a tranny shop, and the guys that work there are friends of mine. so i got a little advice.
My opinion: If you don't have a friend around that's done it before, I wouldn't recomend it without a helms manual. the other manuals just don't go into enough detail. (I had a Haynes, and it only had instructions for the 84-87 models. Thank the Lord I had help or I would've destroyed my tranny.)
Edit: If you're going through the trouble anyway, you might as well get a new bearing. they're not that expensive.

which bearing are you replacing? the input bearing (sits in the clutch housing), or the bearing that sits in the transmission housing?
either way, i'd suggest simply buying a new bearing. it'll cost around $30, and you get a brand new bearing.

k thanks to all the help from these guys i got mine apart and got it back together with it shifting in to all gears....if u are going to replace the maininput shaft bearing then i would tell u to find someone that has experince with the trans...from what is sounds like is that ur # one tranny has the same problem as mine did....tha mainshaft bearing is most likely not the problem it is the maininput shaft bearing...(u have to take all the gears out to get to that) and u will be buying a new bearing... and i would replace the seal...but if u have some under standing of the trans then u probly would be able to do it...
