Got the head off the block today, and it will be going off to the engine builder next week after all the parts come in. I knew the head was own3d by its previous JDM owner, but i was pleasantly surprised to see the block/pistons in great shape. Not alot of deposits and no visible pitting or anything, so i dont forsee any problems with the block in the near future. Pics, as always, are below for your viewing pleasure.
Block in relatively good shape:

Head in terrible shape (JDM owners must be cheap asses when it comes to oil changes)

The head will be cleaned at the engine builder, and im having an ITR valvetrain installed (including Cams), along with new valve seals and a mild porting. Nothing too extreme, prob wont even notice it at all.

icky...i dare you to lick it haha. I bet you'll notice some improvement, who knows he may forget and give you oversized valves something crazy like a 15 angle valve job and then he might forget which cams are yours and put in some wicked race cams that came off some honda race v8. I highly doubt it though...hopefully its worth the money, how much is going to cost?

Its costing around 700 for the whole deal...traded some computer work for a new oem head gasket and new oem head bolts. Bought a new timing belt, tensioner, and h20 pump to replace while im in there anyway. I had the new valve seals left over from another project, i bought brand new ITR valve springs, and the actual work is going to be around 200 or so. I got the ITR cams brand new from a guy on Weaksauce.org for a killer deal. I would do the springs and seals myself as it would be a good learning experience, but i have a HPDE on the 25th and my job leaves me with little spare time. Should have the head back on friday or monday hopefully, ill post pics when its done.

Yeah i tried to run clean oil through it about 3 times in about 1000 miles but it didnt get any cleaner...doesnt burn a drop though, no smoke or oil loss. The cylinders look black because of the reflection from the top of the piston, they are really in fine shape. The head does stink like a sonofabitch though.

"I'd go ahead and drop the pan and clean it and the oil pickup, i bet they look just like the head."
That's some really good advice. If you're brave, fluch the whole system with a bit of kerosene. That should break up the sludge/blackness. Just make sure you get it ALL out, cause it'll cause whatever new oil you put in to break down a bit... or something like that. I'm not 100% sure what it'll do, but it's not good. Just get it all out.

yes yes.
Got the head back with all the stuff installed, cleaned up very nicely. I didnt get it ported due to the fact that i couldnt afford the down time and i didnt have the extra money right now to get it done the way i wanted it done, so ill save the porting for the next time it comes off.

You can see the ITR exhaust springs there, I got both sets installed.

Cant believe its the same head as the one above!

Lets see:
ITR Valve springs - $150 New from Acura
ITR cams - $260 - NIB from a Weaksauce.org seller
new valve seals - $0 - had left over from previous head
b16 head gasket - $0 - traded computer work
b16 head bolts - $0 - traded computer work
h20 pump - $80
timing belt - $40
Tensioner - $50
cam seals - $8
cam cap - $6
labor on head - $145
valve adjustment - $0 - did myself
labor to reinstall head - $0 - did myself
so the total is right around $750 bucks. Was it worth it? IMO yes, not only for the gains (very much verified on the butt dyno), but i can now rev to 8400ish safely, the head was cleaned, the valves reseated, and new valve seals were installed. Its just one less thing ill have to do down the road.
BTW my girlfriend and I just broke up. Just thought id throw that in there. Mabye i should have spent the $750 on her head instead of my CRX's...

if your GF required 750 to maintain a relationship, you are better off without her
besides, can she now rev to 8400 safely?
i bet you wouldn't be able to keep her happy for long with that 750.
good riddance and hang tight, someone better will be there to appreciate you and your car.
my block looks much, much worse.
my GF is, alas, still with me.
