Working on Cars: Winter 2002 (56k...ouch)
Well guys, this winter break from college, my buds and i had a HUGE car install night. In total, this night took about 18 hours or so, nonstop. The night was 100% successful, with no problems after. What happened to the cars are as follows:
robbie, me (neo1z) - skunk2 cams, gears, valvesprings, and retainers
scott (slippyleskb) - put in his head unit in his NEW TOY, a gorgeous 93 civic cx.
dan (redstargsr) - put in his itr valvesprings and retainers, to compliment his new '01 itr cams in his 92 GSR
marshall (delslow94) - also installed skunk2 valvesprings and retainers to compliment his itr cams which, to update, are now successfully installed as well
also, i know i can speak for all of us when i give a huge THANK YOU to ben chang (IN VTEC) for his AMAZING support and help...here is the cliff notes of the story: i had made a post about the snap-on tool to do the valvespring install...didnt have one, didnt want to buy one. ben told me that he would SHIP me his tools so that i could use them, then i could ship them back. never met him before, he just trusted. then, after i sounded really dumb asking him like 3 hours worth of questions about the install, he said he would come down and help not just me, but all of my friends with our valvetrain installations. and that he did. he brought all of his tools, and taught us so much. he never asked for anything in return -- a truly amazing person
damn, i mean he didnt even have time to install his vafc because he had to help us. ben, 12
for you. man if you ever need anything, youve got 6 friends in the nati who will drive up there and help --- anything, just ask us.
also, i want to say thanks to dan parsons (he has that 92 gs, who, within the next couple days, installed his crower cams and valvetrain), and rob rosenburg for helping out as well (3Down hatch).
anyway, as you guys were waiting for, here are the pics from the event... we began at 5:00pm on a sunday night, and we ended @ around 11:30 am or so the next day...it was a hardcore fun night with good buds working on cars.
it doesnt get any better
here is a picture of the garage - from left to right, my car, marshall's car, and dan's car. also, you guys can see marsh and scott looking cool, while ben does the work.
scott and marsh workin on marsh's valvesprings
workin on dan's car (dan is in the ugly jackety), rob's holdin the light, because he is funny, or something.
marshall learning how to use the snap on valvespring compressor, on my car...
the snapon tool is god.
tip: valve keepers suck. and the fall everywhere. to keep them in the retainer, put some vaseline in there --- its sticky, but petroleum based, so no problems
ben finishin up my car, dan and dan p. just starting his valvesprings...
everyone workin

ben's car (quick as hell), dont remember the mods too well, but im sure he'll be here eventually
here is rob's hatch and dan p's 92 gs (jdm one pieces...arrr) - thanks for the help guys
i suppose thats about it.
hopefully the guys will get on here and offer their comments about the night...but i just thought id share it with you guys, i like hearing stories about awesome car nights, so here is one. also, if anyone has any technical questions regarding valvespring or retainer install, ask any of us, we'll be happy to help, or try.
oh yes, and once again, thanks to ben

good post there robbie. definately a good night full of learning and accomplishing. one thing is that if u set everything up correctly and make sure ur only messing with the crank you can do the valvesprings and retainers easily. just gotta know the feel that u will learn after about the first 4 valves. i will say tho i about had a heart attack when firing them up for the first time. i had a cylendar of un adjusted valves and i was gettin some tapping...but sure enough we got it fixed. good work fellas...thanks ben i might need to call upon you for a piston install.
here are a couple more:
cams, gears, scott...yea. he looks happy. he should be.
comparison of itr cams (dan is holding them) and the skunk2s in my ride
another snapon tool shot -- really complex tool, but i highly recommend getting one

yeah that snapon tool is cool, helped one of my friends remove valvetrain with that thing. The particular head we were working on was off the car, but we used this tool anyway. He would push down on the valve springs and retainers while I stuck my "magnet on a stick" in there to catch the keepers.

Apex'i VAFC manual:
CAUTION:
.Be sure to connect the brown and black wire of the V-AFC to a ground.
.Be sure to connect the brown wire CLOSER to the ECU than the black wire. Failure to do so MAY HIGHLY result in improper product operation and engine damage.
Make sure you check these...I'm soldering the V-AFC to the Field's harness right now and taking pics. I was reading over the V-AFC install instructions and came across this.

Yea that Magnet on a stick is godly!!!! Well, just to let you guy's know, my stereo bumps!!!
Oh well, too bad I couldn't have done something a tad more fun then just a Stereo install, like some Shocks and Springs. Oh well, it was an awesome night! I met some great guys and we should definately get back together some time and just chill (of course when my car is worthy). Oh well Have a great night
