the car won't go into first, has trouble going in/out of second and in/out of third, too. stock motor/clutch/tranny. bad clutch? synchros gone? shift linkage?

I would say his synchros are prolly going out but it could also be the clutch. Sux for him.

hello, it is probably not your syncros, i had the exact same problem, its a clutch problem, i can't remember what it was , it think it was the throw out bearing or the pilot bearing, anyways, Don't get a new transmittion . i am sure its your clutch. hope this helps
