Axle wont come out (Hub side, Pictures Included)
We're doing a swap on a car that has had a problem with rust. A lot of the bolts are rusted on, we normally take the axles out by taking off the fork and unbolting the lower control arm, then you can just hit the axle from the out side through the hub. But this one we're on will not budge, I see some rust in the hole, any tips?

keep tapping it with a hammer with the hub kinda pulled toward you.
if that doesnt work try putting an air chisel in that little hole in the center and put it on high and go at it.
itll come out with the air chisel

aw man, rust sucks
when i took out my axle for the first time i used a block of wood as an insulator to prevent metal on metal contact. hit that bitch hard, cause it barely budges.
However, i took off the tranny side off first and hitting it out after that was much easier

There is a special tool that connects to the hub held on by the lug nuts, that is threaded, and taps into the axle, pushing it out. I have no idea what it is called, but when I did my budies cv joints we used this. I had it at my auto shop class luckly. Ryan
Hmm good ideas I'll have to get a hold of an air chisel, we have air tools over here but no air chisel. This is the second swap we're doing in the last two days.
Yesterday:
Loaded my old Si Engine in some guys trunk, pics will be up soon. Sold
Pulled my ZC engine out of my car.
Friends Car arrives, start draining fluids and everything.
Today:
Pull his engine if we get the axle out and put the ZC in.
The D16A6 in the trunk looks hilarious, that poor accord left looking like a lowrider.

Air Chisel Didn't do the trick
Any other ideas this axel has not budged coming out of the hub. This is the only thing left before we pull the engine, please help.

Get a hub puller, it attaches to the wheel studs and has a metal spike that goes right into the axel. It will actually push out the axel more than it will remove the hub at all.
just remember not to mushroom out the end of the axle then it wont fit threw the hub. I did that once. It was fun swinging that hammer.
get soem heat on that b****. Get it really hot then shoot some penatrant on it, it might take soem time, but by forcign the metal to expand and contract you can usually get the rust to break, also a good tool is PB blaster.
not on ly does heating cause the rust to break, but when you shoot the pb blaster on it when it is hot and expanded, the pb blaster has a chance to get sucked in further.
an idea i have never had to resort to would be heat it up nice and hot (it doesnt have to be red) then shoot the middle part (axle) with a can of co2 turned up side down. That stuff is super cold when used upside down. that should cause a drastic temperature change to break the rust.
good luck

i can't help but notice you stripped the **** outta that screw on your rotor..i did the same god damn thing. i think that if you used some liquid wrench and some elbow grease you can get it out of there...do you have your lower ball joint and steering gear disconected from your hub? just makin sure, good luck.
put the axel nut on... then hit it with the hammer so u wont mushroom it.. if not you can always pull off the lower control arm adn swing it outta the way and make sure u pull the axel outta the tranny... then it will still be in the hug but it would be outta the motor...
We mushroomed it, must have happened yesterday. It sucks too because we have the engine out, we just pulled the axle out of the trans side. The kid wants to replace his axle any way because his CV Boots are rotted away. So the axle is still stuck.
We werer thinking of making something like this out of 3/16 flat bar. Drill two holes and thread on the lug nuts to push it out. At this point damaging the axle does not matter, it's going in the garbage, we have another axle to use as a core.

Take off the knuckle and take it to a shop, I'm sure they have some machine to take it out easily.
if you got access to a torch set, eat it up and than spray water on it, then wack it up with a 5 or 10 pound wacker.
see ya

This tool will solve all your problems:
At first I just rented one, but after I found out how helpful they were I bought one. Awesome tool.
Hey Bro, I know the feeling. Try and rent a spindle puller. It resembles a huge dent puller. it screws to your hub and will prevent the maring of your threads, im 99% sure this will work for you. Another thing ive done is used a butane torch to make the extraction easier

then go to taco bell.. eat something and then more
