Default Action Kevlar clutch problem.

Well I took the car out to the track last night with the new clutch and flywheel setup. The car felt good at first. The clutch was grabbing hard. I was even having trouble slipping it from high rpms because it would be smooth than just BAM and grab.

But, after a few runs it started to slip. Not super bad but bad enough for people in the stands to hear my slipping in 4th gear a ways down the track. I'm wondering what the cause could be. Can Kevlar not take back to back runs as well as organic?

I broke the car in with 500 city miles. I mean I freaking went out at 2am in the morning and just did low rpm stop and go driving. Any long distance trips I would stop a few times and go through the gears just in case. I put about 700mi before I even tried to launch it and then I didn't even launch above 4-5k. At the track last night I had over 1,600mi before attempting my 7,000rpm launches which the stock clutch took for more than 200 passes and 53,000mi.

I installed the clutch making sure to clean the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces. I also installed the clutch without touching it and I used dust free latex gloves just to make sure the install was surgically clean.

This is nothing negative about Action because it is probably me or something I didn't do but please help or give suggestions. Thanks.

i would guess it may be the hard kevlar expanding and contracting at such a fast rate from the heat.... if you pop open your tranny to look at the clutch take a pic, i'd be interested in finding out

i wonder how this comes to play in your earlier review

That is what happened with my Exedy Organic after one night at the track. So unhappy with the Exedy Clutch, from the grinding noise and having to adjust the push rod to slipping afr 1000 miles.

I decided to order a clutch that will take the abuse and last! ACT Extreme PP with there Steet/Strip Disc and a Fidanza Flywheel. That will come in this week and go in late this week or next. I will post a review!

thanks for sharing, but i think the extreme pp will cause the clutch to be uber hard to mash down activeaero is looking for a stock feel

If Activeaero wants a stock pedal feel then the ACT Heavy Duty PP is perfect, yes the Extreme is a tad bit stiffer, but not bad at all. Dont know why everyone is scared of a little stiffer pedal? "To each his own" ......

Well I was told that this is basically the best setup for my needs that I could buy. I was also told that if my stock clutch could take multiple back to back 7,000rpm ride clutch launchs the Kevlar unit could take 10 times as much. The clutch seems to be grabbing fine again. Makes me think it is something to do with the Kevlar's heat properties. Maybe once it heats up it starts to slip worse than organic but just lasts longer and bites better. I'm really looking for a response from Rocket but they never answer my PM's so I figured this was the best way to go about it.

Could having air in my clutch lines affect the clamping force of the pressure plate? I bled them after the install but maybe I need to do it better.

*Note to self: Don't EVER buy ANYTHING from Rocket*

An ACT HD pressure plate with a street/strip disc will suit your needs fine.

it was what i was thinking, but if you think about carbon based rotors, they really stink with the bite before a proper warm up, so i dont know what to say...

Thanks for the info. I'm still in the market for a clutch. The Action 1KS is still my top choice though. I will not be drag racing my car much.

Bump Brock you might also want to post this in the Forced Induction forum as that's where Rocket usually can be found.

I had the ACT HD pp on my old car and you could seriously not tell the difference in pedal feel. I've never felt the extreme personally.

Just to let you guys know, I had an Action Stage 1KS Kevlar clutch in my 99GSR(before the accident) and it performed great, never 'slipped' as described above, even after some fairly long hard drives(approx 45min) thru some mountainous roads in GA, I loved it. And I also have nothing but great thing to say about Rocket, from my experiences. later

Update: After letting the clutch cool it is biting just as hard as ever. I have a theory that since it produces such high friction levels it builds alot of heat when trying to slip it like I do from 7,000rpms. As long as it continues to bite hard in non drag situations that is fine. I didn't by my ITR to be a drag car anyway. Besides that it grabs hard and I love it.

Please note that I launch extremely high and my drag strip is very low traffic. I can make several back to back passes with absolutely no wait in between.

Brock: Kevlar will slip a lot when it gets hot. That's why I would never run one in a car that I wanted to drag race.

-Dave, who has driven kevlar clutches and has had all of them slip when they get hot.

I'm not Reid, but I'd venture a guess that he said that in response to the quote, which was that rocket never replies to Brock's IMs..

Well I didn't buy mine to be a drag car (even though I do it because it is fun). As long as it is normal thats fine with me. On all the other runs it grabbed like a **** and is still grabbing awesome to date. I guess it just can't take 7,000rpm launches back to back to back like ole stocky could. Oh well as long as it holds up better than stock on a "real" track.

I wasn't saying you did. Just saying the kevlar clutches are not good for drag racing. Drag car is something most cars on this forum will never be

Oh dude I didn't mean to sound like I had a tone. I was just letting everyone know that is thinking this clutch sucks just because it can't take repeated 7,000rpm launches. I am very happy with it.

If Activeaero wants a stock pedal feel then the ACT Heavy Duty PP is perfect, yes the Extreme is a tad bit stiffer, but not bad at all. Dont know why everyone is scared of a little stiffer pedal? "To each his own" ......
I've had the Xtreme plate and ss disc before, definitely stiffer on the pedal. Totally streetable, but its no where near 'stock' feel.
