My CRX SiR has been smashed up and I need a car to get to work and back. Based on my budget, it looks like the only interesting Honda would be the 2nd Gen Prelude. 1.8 twin carb versions are around, mostly manual. Does anyone here own one? Is maintenance a problem with these cars? Is the A18 engine good? Can I rebuild and tune it? Is there a tuning site for 2nd gen Preludes?
Sorry to ask so many questions. I'm desperate...

if you mean "rebuild and tune it" as like a fast car, i dont think it would be that great. daily driver maybe. you maybe could swap the motor, never heard of it or anything about a 2nd gen.
don't waste your money on one of those unless you can find the si. i had a dual carb prelude and it had no power and was very hard to tune without spending a lot of money and changing a lot of things. it isn't worth it for the little bit of power that you can get out of it. as a daily driver, the car probably gets about 23-25 mpg. road pretty nice, but just wasn't as good as the 89 that i have now. i would definately say look for a little newer model, or at least find the fuel injected model.
Don't listen to them. http://www.honda-prelude.com I own two & both are fast!
I used to have an 85 with the dual carbs. Is was a reliable car, but slow as hell. Most mechanics don't like working on those carbs anymore but on the bright side I sold mine with 260,000mi and it still ran pretty good. I saw it recently with about 300,000mi...still running. Good luck
PS- I would hold out for the fuel injected one if you can though
