Default 91 Si Exhaust mod. comments?

Hi,
I have a totally stock nearly perfect condition 91 Si owned for 8 years by a Honda employee.
I want now to slowly begin to tweak the car and would like opinions if any of all ya'all would do that.

I'm thinking of putting in a SUPERFLEX INTAKE SYSTEM in.

I realize there are more high end, non twisty polished pipes and the like but is this superflex gonna get me 10-15 H.P. extra?

I appreciate anyone for assisting with this relatively lo end bit of mod stuff.
I hope in time to have a few nice tweaks on this car.
It's a beauty.

thanks
mftorso

Unless thats some sort of brand newly discovered secret intake, its not going to give you anywhere near 10+ hp, those numbers are mostly seen on either domestics or maybe turbo applications but not Normally Aspirated unless its built to the teeth. The cheapest way to get some more power is basic boltons like Intake header and exhaust. Intake brand shouldnt really matter, just stear clear of ANYTHING from MATRIX or APC. Companies like Injen, DC, and AEM are the most popular companies, i have a Injen Cold air intake myself and love it, nice big piping and great quality filter. Header i guess DC, if anyone else wants to suggest some other companies go ahead, again stear clear of APC or MATRIX. Exhaust, as long as you dont get anything with super big piping, leave that to if when you plan to seriously build up your motor, 2 inch piping should be good if youre not going to build up the motor, 2 1/4 tops. Universal mufflers like the ones that look like canisters tend to sound raspy unless you upgrade your resonator, plus their piping is usually big. Also youll need to get custom piping welded for that. A lot of people suggest a Thermal R&D, DC Sports, or Greddy (Greddy being the most popular because of their quality and its not loud, nice and deep) exhaust... i dont have an aftermarket exhaust on my car yet so i havent experienced it. Anyone else on this board wanna help this guy out with some suggestions?

Hands DOWN. the first three mods on you car should be an AEM Cool Air Intake, Thermal 2.25" exhaust, and a good header like DC.

Also, if you don't have decent tires, a set of Azeni's is also a MAJOR plus in the handling/hooking up department.

you could get a used DC too, as long as its not dented. You get what you pay for. Anyone have the OBX one and can tell us how it is? I'm pretty sure OBX is a company like APC and Matrix

read that.

Sometimes I think it's funny that the majority of people on this board think that DC is the be all - end all of headers. They're good, but there are others out there that are just as good for less money.

LOL! Thats great, I guess we should take it more easy on the newbie's but Its just to fun.

BTW: AEM CAI, Good Cat back exuast. (Even Custom 2.25-2.5" pipping) with a Universal muffer is alright, Then a good after market header. Pretty much in that order to.

Good luck with your car

find out exactly what you want to do with the car first? are you going for a daily driver, autox, or drag racing? you gotta find out what you wanna do with a car BEFORE you start modifying. trust me, i learned the hard way with autocross. i wish i could still run in stock class. find out what you want to do, and then work on modding it from there..

Make sure you do it right the first time. Don't buy cheap parts like APC and Matrix. I bought a set of Pacesetter headers on my 90 Si and within a year there was a hole in it. And it rusted almost immediately. I had to buy another set of headers. I purchased the stainless steel Greddy SP cat back exhaust four years ago and have had it since. I paid $500 but it was well worth it since the exhaust has been on both of my cars.

Anyone ever touched the stuff from Magnaflow. Most of the domestic guys love it. Flows really, really well and very quiet off idle. Open it up a little and the sound is awesome. Just my 2 cents.

if your serious about building a nice car then dont waste your time with intake/header/exhaust .. you can bolt on all the little knick knacks you would like but in the end the only way to really optimize your motor is to either build your motor or go hybrid. Going hybrid would pretty much mean takin a motor from a integra, prelude, or japanese civic and putting into your car. then you have a much better base to build with. motor swaps are a bit pricey but for the money you put into it you will get waaaaaaaay more out of your car then a in and out system.intakes and mufflers should really be the last of your worries. why spend cash and worry about makin a mere 10 hp if your lucky when you can put some more cash into it and create some great hp/tq gains. if you wanted to keep the stock motor then you can think about building one. building a motor is very nice but you want to choose the motor you want to build wisley. some motors are better that other for different things. for example.. the b18a or b18 b is a low hp motor although it has high tq and low compression .. therefor is ideal for going forced induction ie; turbo, nitrous, or supercharged. you can go with a b16 or b18c, b18c5 "to name a few"wich are all vtec motors and high compression motors .. so you would most likey want to build all motor setup using these long blocks. you can do things like use a b18b block with a vtec head and have best of both worlds. there also other cheaper methods to swapping.. you can go with a single cam vtec or a zc motor but you would for the effort and for some more cash you can see greater gains by going with a b series motor. try to think bigger than what everyone tells you. good luck with your new car it has alot of potential to be a really fun car.

OK, I/H/E has already been covered; but a question was asked about the OBX header........I have this on my 91 hatch si, and I got noticible gains, I wouldn't recomend it though. The only reason I got it si b/c I'm having a B16 built right now, and I got the header shipped for liek $125 & I wasn't satisfied with the si motor while I waited, so I got it. It added an increase to the higher rpm's and it helped. But get a real header from a reputable company.

OK.......I agree with the last note in here; for the cost of getting I/H/E you can almost get a B16- save your $$ & get a new motor if you actually want to go faster. A decent B16 is only roughly 1200.00 + shipping.get a new motor.
