Default just got 89 hatch what to do?

I just got a rough but running 89 hatch for 4 hundred, want to do something to it. What can i do? I have never owned a honda before. I am know classic domestics but all the electronic stuff is beyond me. Dont want anything too crazed but heard a B16 swap is easy. If so which one, yadda yadda yadda.
thanx a lot.

What model hatch do you have? Just hang around on this website for a while, and you'll have a plan soon. Good luck bro.

sounds like a good deal on that hatch... b16 swap is sorta pricey, but not too bad ... I am going to be getting a full swap done (including $700 installation fee, shipping, new clutch, axles, mounts, linkage, and all the other goodies) for $2800

if your looking for an easy and fairly cheap swap with a little bit of power - ZC motor is probably the best for a direct swap, no need for mounts, wiring is simple, and has a little go (mid to high 15s)

if you got an si, a lot of people will say to build it for a turbo setup... but it's all up to you

Well it depends on what your looking to do with your hatch make it look good or make it fast. Usually a good thing to start out with is clean the car up replace anything that needs replaced, lowering the car always makes it look alot better , easy and cheap mods are intake,header,cat.,exhaust. If you want to go fast B16 is probably your best bang for your buck in the long run total cost for a b16 swap is 2500-3000. If you dont have that much a JDM ZC motor is descent and will run you about 2000.

To SteveeO - 2800 for a ZC swap???? That sounds kinda high, in oregon(dont know about your area) I can get a ZC swap all day for 2000(installed). And B16 I can get for 2700-3000(installed). If your going to pay 2800 for a ZC look into finding a B16 more hp for your money and more potential in the long run. Just my 2 cents

2800 is a set price for b16 swaps
if it were me i would do it myself
it's not that hard if you get a si harness

Talk to Groundzero, Race Dezign they will quote you that. Average price for a full swap meaning ZC motor, si or jdm ZC tranny, timing belt and all fluids replaced, axles, ECU, clutch, rewiring all that wonderful stuff and labor and remember they do it right not some half assed job.(its cheaper if you stick with your old tranny). Also I called around when I was thinking of going ZC and talked to Foreign Motors(motor importer) and it was $500 for the ZC longblock by itself, nothing else included. Yes if you do it yourself it will be alot cheaper but thats a given. But again why talk about the ZC, best bet is a b16 IMO its only alittle bit more $$$ but has more hp out of the box and has alot more potential. Not going to go into detail because there has been alot of motor wars on the board so lets not go there.

ahh...yea if you go to a shop you're gonna get bent over

a friend of mine did a single cam zc swap when his old motor went to heaven...he got it (through honda i believe) for like $200 and it ran very well...

i myself have the single cam vtec zc swap (jspec z6) and it runs nicely...friend got it for $700

and yea, i agree...b16 owns j00

in response to your "use the search and don't bother me", i can understand. I am simply honda illiterate. Meaning acronyms and terminology doesnt cause any recollection. I simply posted this so that I could garner some knowledge from some type of yoda persona. I appreciate the help everyone has shown. This car is a DX but which B16 works the best? I read in the SEARCH that there is a B16A1, B16C5 etc. What is going to cost max of 3k installed and with some daily driveable power. I like nice looking cars, but won't drive them. They don't stay pretty long enough in my hands.

You will want to go with the first gen b16a SIR1 it will be the cheapest and easiest to find also if you are buying a full swap first gen b16a has a cable tranny which you will need, the other ones have hydro trannys. I dont believe there is a b16c5 you are thinking of a b18c5 which will run you alot more then a b16 if you have the money go for a b18c but if your on a tight budget b16 works. B16 full swap shouldnt run you more then $3000(shop install). You will feel a big difference going from a d15b2(92hp) to a b16a sir1(160hp). Hope all this helps

huh? "b16 swap is sorta pricey, but not too bad ... I am going to be getting a full swap done (including $700 installation fee, shipping, new clutch, axles, mounts, linkage, and all the other goodies) for $2800"

I was just telling him that ZC was a cheaper way to go

also, saying this is going to be your daily driver - ZC would probably be the way to go... you don't have to wait for VTEC to kick in to get your power, not like your revving to 5000 rpm's much on daily driving, ZC is a good engine - I changed my mind because I heard about reliability problems, and I got more money than I expected from insurance... some basic boltons to the ZC and U could be running low 15's, which is perfect for a daily driven car, and not to mention around 25-32 mpg

Very true the ZC can be a cheaper alternitive and not a to bad one. But when you compare everything to each other B16 just makes more sense. But what you were saying about power till you hit vtec , B16s should have more power through out the power band. Also ZC's are a little harder for support meaning parts compared to your o so popular B-series motors. But again its all in how much money you have and what your goals for your car are. ZC if you want a fresh motor with a little more power for a very good price or a B16 that cost a little more but in the long run can be usually built for less and to go faster. And usually a b16 gets 25-28mpg in a hatch.
