hello this is my first post so have mercy. i own a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8Turbo. im a member from vwvortex.com.

i was just wondering what your guys experience was when racing against Volkswagens. i hear so many stories in the VW forums about them beating hondas "like a red-headed step child". i just wanted to hear the other side of the story because ive won some and lost some. whats your guys experience when racing us?

and just for fun heres my car. pushing 18 psi and getting 225 whp with 245 lb/ft torque.

My story: I crashed one of your Orange Cty meets with a few friends that own S4`s. VwVortex Guys pointed and laughed as I parked and while I left. Funny thing is I had just whooped on one of the s4`s . Cars were nice, meet was fun, the owners were dicks.

I`ve seen a few fast vdubs, but nothing really crazy. A buddy has a fairly built 1.8t from AMS, but it still gets raped by dohc turbo`d Hondas. Nice cars, they are just too heavy IMO. Not really fun to work on either.

yeah i agree that the audi owners (especially S4) tend to be dicks. i think you are right about the weight. our cars are kind of bulky. what do you mean by not fun to work with? if you mean that we dont get on the dyno and tune thats true. us VW owners tend to be lazy and have companies tune for us. we get a 50 hp increase from a $500 chip. 20 more hp from a 3 inch turbo back exhaust for a grand. its a completely different world from the honda tuning scene. you guy tend to build your cars by yourselves while we just get a kit. more power to you for having the patience to do that. the reason we dont have any "crazy" cars is that not as many people tune VWs. the more people you have doing it the more crazy the tuning can become as there are that special few who really go all out. the only "crazy" VW i know about is Billy T. he had a 500 hp golf using the original 1.8 block. you guys have more people like that because you have more people. well thats my opinion.

I own both. 13.4 sec vw and a potantial 10sec street civic. in general the vw's whoop up on civics because the vw comes turbo stock. you put a chip, intake, and exhaust and you are in the low 14's. very hard to do in a civic. A properly turbo'd civic however, will lay a can of whoop *** down on any vw for the most part. so the way i see it is that vw's smote most of the hondas cause they come turbo stock and there are a lot of very slow hondas out there. But honda with 20+psi of boost will whip each and every one of the vw's they run!! except my friend chris's vw. he laid down 591hp and 610tq in a jetta vr6 turbo but he is a very big exception. I'm sure you know who he is. chris green (unforgettable sounds and performance).

hmmmm see i love vw's but see the owners are freakin cocky bastards that thinks there **** dont stink. i went to water wagons and damn they were ragging on hondas all day long on the pa system. "we have class we dont drive a honda" and **** like that. then this freakin nice *** type r rolls up and he doesnt even get out. thats what i should have done damn. waste of time. just pissed me off more then anything cause my friends that own vw's are hella cool.

 

Most hondas on the street are slow with just a muffler and intake. But if you take a civic hatchback and throw in a cheap B16 with a 50 shot he will start spanking up a lot the VW's with a 1.8T with bolt ons. VW's are nice. I like them since it is not something you see everyday. But when it comes to going fast it is easier and cheaper to go with a honda since there is a lot of parts available for them.

 

I think that a lot of VW's are pretty quick because of what is stated above. Chip, exhaust, intake and its a pretty quick car. It seems to me that the number of VW owners that take the leap from a 13.8-14.5 car to a sub 13 or even sub 12 second car, however, is far fewer than the number of Honda owners. There are thousands of hondas with swaps running either a supercharger, turbo, nitrous, or some combination. Maybe there are a ton of fast (under say 13.0) VW's and I just don't know about them, but I know at local honda meets some very fast street cars show up.

 

i used to be heavy into the vw scene before getting fully intot he hondas... as a matter of fact my crew chief was the 1st one to move from his 16v gti to a 90 integra then i just followed along as well ... things I used to do wasvr6 rabbit gti to weber carb'd 2.1 liter 16v ... were still slow and VERY unreliable ... the VR6 was ok, it conpeted well with the GSRs especialyl when transplating the vr6 corrodo motor which has a few more horses, it the A2 gti chassis ... but then when you do the GSR intot he civic chassis the VW get their asses handed to them ...

the VR6 boys were cocky as hell back then too ... used to love ***'n then up with my FROG all motor.

If i had to do a VW I'd go stupid on the 1,8T motors, they have a lot of potential.

I disagree with your statement about S4 owners being dicks. I own a S4 and almost all the meets we have in NJ we welcome any type of cars as long as you can hang out and have a good time. We usually just sit around and bullshit about different kind of cars and help each other out kind of like it is here on Honda-tech. I am also a big poster over on Audiworld and yes a lot of guys on there think the S4 is fast b/c all they race are the civics with fart cans and no really work done to them. But people who have serious work done to their civics or tegs can pretty much hand an S4 its *** if it is dry out. Usually when I see posts on Audiworld about people talking smack on Honda’s I always chime in with the fact that the S4 costs how much more then a civic and I would hope it could beet a civic. From what I have read here on Honda-tech with people that know what there doing and have some money invested in their Honda’s the S4 is really no match for them. I think that BMW drivers are dicks. I have never met one who thinks his **** does not stink. Sorry for the rambling.

 

I think he misunderstood what I said. I attended the meet w/ the Audi S4 guys, they were cool as hell. I go to there stuff all the time. In fact, a few of them even autoX Hondas.

It`s the vr6/1.8t clowns that were dicks.

my experience with vws is mostly with broken ones at the dealership i work at.
nice cars but knowing what i know i would never want to own one much less drag race in one. the 1.8t and vr6 are really good motors, its just everything around it that is a problem!
to their credit as a youngster i loved seeing gtis with the high speed 3 wheel motion going around big bend at lime rock. i think thats what they are best suited for. i dont mean to rag on the vee dubs too much, but its sad when i have a 17 year old car that can go out every weekend and take all the abuse i give it and i can point out a bunch of brand new cars in our lot that cant survive daily driving! imagine that your brand new car has windows that can fall down at any given moment, a cel for goodies like MAF sensor or coils or your turbo?! imagine vw telling you that burning 3 quarts of oil in less then 1000 miles is "NORMAL."

It is true that isn't expensive to modify an engine that already comes turbo from the factory but when you guys didn't have turbo's it was as expensive as hondas. When I THINK volkswagen, i think 1.8-2.0 16v, VR6, G60 and old school MKII's. I don't really like the new generations of volkswagen...I like the old school euro style. I'm a honda guy but i can give props to vw when necassary

As far as racing goes... Thats what her A3 is for... I'm the mechanic, and usually the driver of it too...



We have taken a break from the performance side of things, and switched more to the looks side for a while... I'm planning on redoing the entire Direct Port setup with her spare 2.0 Intake Manifold that she has...

And as far as VW Owners attitudes, 95% of them are AWEFUL! I went to Waterfest this year, and i had some friends that went too. They brought their hondas, and parked them outside of the park, in spectator parking, and came back to their cars being spit on, keyed, and even pissed on! That is just RUDE and childish...

VW Owners also think they are gods gift most of the time, which is what i hate... There is this kid in my town with a K2 Jetta, who thinks he's hot **** b/c he has 17" Rims, SuperSprint Muffler, and a VW Motorsports Shift ****... AND THATS IT... He's like "I win trophies at car shows, because my car is so clean" and i look at him like "Ok, its stock.. whoopdie doo"

VW Owners need to pull their heads out of their ***... And sorry for rambling, but i'm on drugs right now for my broken ankle...

How can people catogorize people by the kind of car they drive? I.E. all vw owners are dicks. Thats like saying all honda owners are riceboys. Also just to lets yas know there were 11 sec all motor vw's before civics even existed and the only hondas available in the states were the 600 and s800.

 

I dont like them personally hard to work on, but my boy has a very nice one.
He has cam springs and some head work done, very sweet looking car and a really good guy. anoth friend has a 2001 golf tdi that he runs a propane kit on, its got hella torque but still not that fast

I agree with the rest of your post.. but come on.. you cant say BMW drivers are dicks. well maybe in your part of town. but i knwo many BMW owners and owned a 2000 3 series myself. of course my love is for the HONDAs. building a proclass CRX as we speak. but in no means was I or some fellow BMW friends ever were dicks to other peeps. i know what you are saying though.. there are some that are cocky.
but anyways. i sold my beemer and got a Yukon XL.. hehe SUV people are cool so far...

Ok, Chris Green is a friend of ours... and he never layed down 591hp/624tq....his best dyno pass was 504.9hp... But the car has yet to make a complete pass.. We keep telling him to stop rushing and do it right... but he is to anxious to get it out even though it's been a 2 year project

Next, Roger i can't beleive you made those comments about VW's when you see us with the fastest VR6's in the entire USA racing all the time on stock blocks w/headgaskets. The only car which had any sort of mechanical failure was mine cause we tryed to push a few more ponies with diffrent cams and ran lean and i fried a piston. Other wise we have 6 vr6s running from 10.81-12.35 with no problems other then 4 snapped axles..

Now personally i see alot of poorly driven honda's and vw's so it really goes down to what honda race which vw.
I'm just spoiled cause my friends have fast vw's and hondas...

Chris has a dyno sheet on the wall of his shop that reads 590.1hp. maybe it was but thats what i am going by. I'll ask him for sure tonight and if it is legit i'll post it up.

 

tim dont take that the wrong way. like the post says whats YOUR experice with vws. at my job i do see some very satisfied owners people who swear by vw (much like some of us with honda). but for everyone of those people there are about 4 or 5 really pissed off individuals.
as far as racing goes guys like you manny, brian, kevin black, prof. nate, and anthony are definatley exceptions to what i think about those cars. you guys are all cool and i respect what you all do at the track but it still doesnt change my feelings about vw.
