Default Help! Clutch/Transmission Problem

Ok, I have had my '98 Type R for about 3 weeks now, and have worked through several problems, but here is my newest one...
First gear is very hard to shift into, it takes some muscle to jam it into it. Sometimes when I stop while the car is in first it will shake like the clutch isnt fully disengaging, but not always. Second gear is fairly smooth, but third gear tends to grind when upshifting under a load. Fourth gear and fifth gear are smooth, but when downshifting from fourth to third, it will not go into gear unless you tap the throttle.
It grinds sometimes when downshifting into first when I am pulling into my driveway (going about 5mph with the clutch all the way to the floor), and second occasionally.
The other day, the car would not go into reverse after about 20 minutes of hard driving....it would only go in partially, then pop out.
Today, the car has begun making a sqeaking noise in neutral, but when I lightly put my foot on the clutch pedal, it goes away. Then when I press in the clutch pedal, it makes a hissing/hydraulic sounding noise. I checked the tranny fluid earlier today and it was fine.
The car has a Stage 3 Clutch the previous owner installed and a short shifter. I have come to the conclusion that my car is fucked up, but is it the transmission or clutch? Freeplay in the pedal seems to be about an inch, and the previous owner said he replaced it about 15000 miles ago. This new noise is worrying me too.

Thanks,

Matt

it could be your synchros.
i'm having problem with 3rd gear at high rpm shift 2 to 3. it grinds little but goes in.
well..to give you advice, you have to open your tranny anyway and if you are doing that might as well get some new parts.
best thing to do is opening it up and see whats wrong.

Sounds like you may have some syncro problems. Clutch free play can be adjusted by the pedal rod, or bleeding the line.

is your clutch slipping? If u dont know, rev it up a bit and drop the clutch....if your wheels dont spin and you here the clutch spining then your clutch is done. I dont think its your clutch .......sounds like your syncros.

Seems like it may be a free play issue to me, but whats up with the noise it started making today? The clutch fluid was pretty dirty looking when I looked at it earlier today, I don't know if that will affect the disengagement of the clutch. Soup ****... Yes, I powershift it from time to time when I get a nice long straight away on an backroad with no traffic, but stoplight to stoplight would just aggravate me....theres so much traffic around here I would be running into the backs of too many cars. Yes it has a grind when powershifting 2-3, but it also does the same thing at 4500, unless I let off the gas for about 2 seconds and lightly put it in gear. The clutch is not slipping, it hits pretty hard.

Thanks,

Matt

Its probably going to be either the release bearing or the input shaft bearing.

Well before my clutch finally went out, I had trouble getting it into first from stops, somewhat smooth into second, grind in 3rd at high RPM adn when downshifting, and always difficult going into reverse. Then right before the clutch completely went out I began to hear a slight "squeak" at idle with my car sitting there and in between shifts.

A few days later it was completely gone, it wouldn't go into gear and would just shudder and grind if I tried (which I had to to get home at 3 a.m.). I pulled the tranny to find that the retainers (edges) for the springs on the clutch disc had broken. I replaced the clutch and everything is good as new.
Just figured I'd share my experience since the symptoms seem very similar. Good luck.

Damn, that sounds exactly like my problem...has that squeaking noise at idle, then when i push in the pedal it make a hissing noise like the disc is still rubbing. I hope that **** doesn't go out....but the plate doesn't seem worn? What kind of clutch was in your car?

Thanks,

Matt

And the plot thickens....I just hopped in my car to take it for a spin, and guess what, it won't go into reverse. Still wouldn't after I warmed it up. Well, ****!

Thanks,

Matt

My clutch that broke was a stock B16 clutch with no more than 10-15k miles on it. Oh well the previous guys replaced it, so I've only had to pay for one clutch

i will snap some pic today, but just wondering, why would you guy think there is no synchro on first gear? do you guy think the tranny is made/designed 30 years ago? did you guy crack a tranny open before? FYI, according to honda japan, type r tranny use single synchro on 1,3,4,5 gear and double synchro on 2nd gear. and for K-series tranny, 1,2 gear are triple synchro and the rest are double synchro. i believe thats the first tranny in the world for fwd have all the gears with more than or equal to double synchro.

Ok...I am so confused. So my car wouldn't go into reverse no matter how hard I pushed on the shifter...couldn't even get a grind out of it. Now here's what I did: wiggled shifter in neutral side to side for 1 minute, pushed as hard as I could into reverse, got some grinds, wiggled again in neutral for 20 seconds, got in half way into reverse, popped out of reverse. Tried several more times, then got it into reverse. Drove for 20 minutes, reverse works fine now. Clutch or tranny?

Thanks,

Matt

Your going to think I am crazzy but try and bleed the clutch fluid. I have to do mine every 1500 miles. I hate it. I take it to acura and they can't figure it out. I use a suringe to get the fluid out of the resevor then use honda dot 3 and bleed the entire sys. Then she ***** like new. I only have 18,500 miles on her. I get the problem with 3rd and it feels like the shifts hang up in 2cnd a little. for reverse I always roll foward a little then try reverse again. it might take a couple of times. I don't like that niether because your car looks like a hoopty or you look like a dumb ***. I have problems with the fluid in my wifes 00 si to. I don't know if it is moisture or the mastercylinder and slave cylinder are to small. Try it and let me know if it worked. I told one of my buds in Florida and it worked great for him.
