Nasty noise in reverse!!!
Noise started a couple of days ago. When backing up, there is a very loud "moan" (for lack of a better word) coming from the rear of the car. It doesn't do it all the time but it's very noticible when it does happen. Anybody had this problem before? Thanks!
same thing happens to me. sound also comes from the rear. i am preaty sure it is a warped rotor. try rolling back slowly without pressing the brakes, you will hear it once everytime the rotor rolls past the calipar. both my front rotors were also warped but acura machined them under warranty, i wonder if they'll do the back ones too
Mine does it too. See if there is a shudder under braking to determine the severity. I am not too concerned since I don't drive the car much but we will see how bad it gets at the auto-x.
Well, my front rotors have been warped for some time now. Because the fronts are soooo bad, it's hard for me to tell if the rears are warped too.
Either way, I would think that this noise would have started a long time ago when the warpage occured, not all of a sudden. Also, why does the noise only appear occasionally?

Mine makes a periodic noise as well when the brakes aren't depressed. This only happens early in the morning or when the car has been sitting over an extended period of time.
So is the general consensus a warped rear rotor?

yea, mine only does it when the car is cold too. i guess when the rotors are cold. but after they heatup and expand, it never happens. so is it the rotors? that's my guess.

mine does this also. i have no idea what it is. sounds like the front drivers side wheel. it also did this on my civic a couple years ago. dont' know what it could be.

How's the car running?

If its when you first start the car and back up its just the ABS system. It's normal.
For me, it doesn't seem to matter if the brakes are being used or not.
Any ideas that don't involve the braking system?

I brought the topic back up cause I've been hearing that noise just about every day too. I had mentioned that I was wondering if I over-torqued my caliper bolts when I changed pads, but I had changed the pads like 5 months before that. I still haven't gotten around to checking the bolts. It does seem like its when its cold too. So yeah, I dunno, but it is annoying as **** and people look at you like there is something majorly wrong with your car, lol
When's the last time the tranny fluid was changed?
but it REALLY sounds like it is coming from the brakes and i've had someone stand next to it when it made the noise to see

My tranny oil was changed about 20k ago - but the sound is definitely coming from the rear of the car, not the front. And it's definitely not the whine from the reverse gear...
My 93 DX civic has this same niose (original post) but it sounds like it's coming from under the hood. On the brakes, off the brakes, moving or standing still. take it out of reverse and the noise goes away. Not a reverse transmission gear whine. Not related to front brakes because I just did an unrelated integra front brake swap with no change. Sounds like a loud moan or whoo. Embarrassing! Now my 94 VX is doing it too intermittantly. My DX noise was intermittant but now it does it nearly every time. I was hoping for an answer here. Now I need to get an assistant to place trans in reverse while I listen underhood. I will report. It is nasty cold outside right now so it might be a while.
i get the same problem in my civic and ITR..i just had the rear discs and pads replaced on the civic and the noise is still there. It also does it when i get out and push the car either forward or back, but it is def more evident while reversing then applying the brake makes the moan louder. A mechanic reckons it is the metal binding to the brakes or someshit. Try getting out and pushing the car i bet it will make the noise too. I also got my E-Brake tightened when the pads were changed so maybe the E-Brake is too tight?? try loosening it and see how you go and get back to us.
