Default Is the shifter supposta be this HARD???

This is my first car thats a manual!!!

I just got my car, its a 94 GSR. Has a short shifter, not sure which kind though.
The problem is when I try to shift, SOMETIMES it is hard to get into gear, even when I fully disengage the clutch. (Usually only 2nd and 3rd, 4th and 5th are cake). Is this normal? Is there anyway to make the shifts more smoother??

Also, when Im about to stop for a redlight, and then it turns green, I am not fully stopped yet but want to shift into first(b/c if i shift to 2nd it will be too sluggish) I can shift it in. Is this normal as well. What can I do because I do not want to shift into 2nd b/c it will accelerate too slow.

thanks

im not sure what ur saying but if ur problem is putting the car in first gear while u are moving then i have the same problem with my gsr. u just got make sure the clutch is fully depressed and jam it in. im sure the short shifter makes it harder. u should check ur clutch fluid and tranny fluid to see if they r at the right levels also.

Most B-Series Hondas I have driven, you have to almost be at complete stop to put the car in first, pretty normal.

yeah, E-Z pass, or any other highway tag holder thingy so you don't have to pay tolls, it can be a bitch. Especially if the tag that usually sticks to your window doesnt stick, and you have to hold that up, stear, and shift

Not necessarily saying that it won't go into gear, you will just have to give a little extra effort, maybe try reving a little when you put it into first.

giving a little extra effort only makes it crunch , but it goes in. its just that crunching thing that sucks. so if i rev it might go in easier????

ry to rev-match(put in neutral-rev to bout 5krpm then put in the lower gear)..it is also easier on the rannyif u can do it rigt.it tok me a little while to learn it smooth now it is natural. oh ya it is god for freeway races or ones that u are already in a higher gear.....i hope this helps...........good luck

my teg has the same problem... short shifter and all... to go into 1st, i just press in the clutch all the way, rev it to the appx rpm range that it would be at @ that speed (example: 2500 would be about 10mph... 5000 about 20 and so on) and it'll go in as easily as all the other gears...

oh, i just meant, when you go throw tolls, i have to hold up the "tagholder", or sensor, they call it, like turns green and i can go, gotta slow to down to about 10 or so, i gotta hold it up with my right hand so it registers, then drop it real quick to shift, just a pain. I guess some sticky window stuff would help, and i can just put the sensor on my windsheild, i'm just too lazy to go buy some. so, if i try to downshift before i get to the tolls, when im going 40 or so, it can be a pain to get into second gear.......ahhh, nevermind, haha.

You can also rev match going into first gear, this usually eliminates the difficulty of putting it in first when rolling

Exactly. This has worked for me as well. But, I rev match all my shifts.

Normal not to be able to get it into first while moving. made it that way to protect 1st gear from overreving. I just start off from second. No biggie.

really? I think they feel very tight and precise. I haven't ever driven a car with a better feeling shifter.

MY GS-R is hard to shift into first while moving as well. Straight rev. matching doesn't work for me, double clutching is the only way it'll slide easily.

Difference between the 2;
Straight rev matching matches the engine speed with transmission output shaft.
Double clutching matches engine speed with transmission input shaft with transmission output shaft.

i think the shifter is a little too long but it doesnt feel like junk. actually it is very smooth excpet for this first gear thing.

someone can correct me if i amwrong but I believe this is due to the lack of syncros on 1st gear. I know from looking at other car specs that 1st gear does not utilize syncros.
