Should I buy it: '91 si hb, 200k miles, $3k.....
Ok, I've been looking for a '91 si hb for a long time and found a nice black one locally. It has 200k miles on it and the guy swears that it doesn't burn any oil..... maybe 1/4 qt. every 3500 miles, he says.
Also, he wants $3k for it but when I spoke to his wife they were talking about letting it go for $2,700. It has springs, I/ E, and a nice sony cd/ boomin bass system.
I was thinking about offering $2,500.....
What do you guys think?
I'm running the vin now..... And I'm going to check it out tomorrow.
$2500 sounds very reasonable. I would think the car w/o mods would be around $1750-$2000 or so. I wouldn't give them more than $500 for the mods on top of that.
HTH.
HTH.
the fact that a car has mods on it usually scares me...could mean its raced out...you can probably tell by driving it and listening to the engine
it'd all boil down to what condition the motor and body and interior is in. I'd gladly pay 3K if the paint was still shiny, the interior was intact, and the motor was strong.
Well, he claims the car is in immaculate condition - inside and out. I'll know when I get a chance to crawl under it and take a look around.
I figure I'll take it to a dealer and get them to do the $100 inspection before I purchase - that way I'll be certain.
Also need to get my friend at the dealer to run the VIN.....
I think its a little high for a car with that high of mileage, just my opinion..Im not sure how I feel about buying a modded car, it could mean it was raced hard, but it could also mean it was taken better care of. Id offer $2200-$2.5k, though they might not go for it. If the body is in good shape, paint is ok, interior is well kept and you like it go for it though

Yeah Brandon, I agree. Mileage is high, but he just had some major service done on replacing the seals and valve job, etc. It also has new clutch and brakes... The mods are minor, so I'm not worried about that - evidence will be there if it was raced.....
Btw: the carfax report came back clean. The guy told me he got in a "fender bender" and someone rearended him. He replaced the hatch and rear bumper... I'll take a look and see. He's the only owner of the car, ever.
I also found another one at a dealer not far away from this car. Same exact car, but no mods. I don't know how much they want for it... Carfax report came back clean on this one too.
*UPDATE:
I checked out the car yesterday. Interior is flawless. sony head unit, and jbl mids and bazooka subs... Amp and 10 disc changer too! The body had one door ding and a couple of minor dings. Also, the front had some minor damage from rocks/ highway driving. The hatch is black, but was originally teal. Also, the right rear quarter panel has been repaired - it was damaged in the fender-bender.
What do you guys think? He said he won't go any lower than $2,700..... I think maybe he'll go as low as $2,500...
I also spoke to the wholesaler about the other car. It has 145k miles on it. Also a '91 si. I ran the VIN and it came up clean - but when I spoke to the guy he said it failed emissions. That's not a concern to me - no emissions where I live. He said he would take $2,600... I'll look at it this weekend.
Opinions?

looking for a car too Ken. My wife is gonna be the owner she actually isn't really feeling the EF civic. I'll try to work on her though.
Thanks for the replies!
I bought the '91 si with no mods for $2,500.00.
Now I have someone who wants to buy it for $2,900.00!
Should I sell it?
Thinking of selling it already?
What plans did you have for this car? Just a daily driver, so your R could be your weekend car? Or do you have some kind of swap in mind?

what's up all, I have had quite a few of these cars and yes it is true if the mods are all ready on the car it maybe an engine that maybe be close to time to replace. But the d16a6 engines are a dime a dozen and you can find one at most any junkyard ( 400-550 for the engine and tranny as i remember it ). BUt if the paint and the interior are in good shape and the sunroof isn't leaking like crazy ( cause if it leaks in between the roof and the ports that are there to route the water out of that area will rust BADD )
2500-3000 may not be a bad deal. Nevermind the fact that you can do all kinds of things to the stock engine, or go b16a and get to having some real fun, thats what i have recently done and i would trade my 91 si for nothing ( except an NSX ). Also make sure to check the body for accident damage, if you can find it point it out to them and ask what happened, see if your getting into something that will cost to much to fix.

Brandon,
It is gonna be my daily driver/ beater so my R will be the weekender. Eventually, though the Si will get a b18c or b18c5 and maybe an sc or fi...
I guess if I can make $400 in 2 days by selling it, I'll buy the other one (cause the paint is nicer) and daily drive it.....
91sifreak, thanks for the comments. I like the b18's better, but maybe the b16 with an endyne sc kit would be nice...
Or maybe a b20 vtec?
