5th Gen Prelude Reliability?
Hey everyone, I'm new to the boards. I'm hoping to get a prelude soon. My question is that I'm looking to buy a 97 - 98 prelude for around $10k. All the ones around here at that price have more than 90k miles on them, even 100k miles. If they arn't abused and were well taken care of how long can I expect it to last? I need it to be reliable throughout college. Any problems I should look for? Thanks in advance!
Yeah it's a good car, should get 200k easily if the car is taken care of. Timing belt and water pump should be changed at 100k miles.
Yes, as long as it has not had any engine mods and has not been abused, 200 - 250k isnt asking too much out of it. Just make sure you have the oil changed frequently and do the regular maintenance.
Stay away from the 97-01 ones with automatic transmissions. The automatic trannies seem to be designed to self-destruct every 40,000mi or so... Other than that, Preludes are pretty bullet-proof. Just make sure regular maintenance has been done - oil changes, timing belt, brake fluid changed, tranny fluid changed, etc.

i have had a 5th gen for about 6 months.. it had a little over 60k miles on it when i purchased it, and it is a very reliable car. The only probs i have had were the ignition switch recall / master cylinder all under warranty and the slave cylinder went, which wasnt under warranty. Like everyone else said, as long as u keep up with the maitenence you shouldnt have any problems

the car could have 100k or only 50k.
it really depends on the ownership history and maintenance records.
sure, hondas should easily go 150k without any major problems.
but i know of some with only 50-70k which were bought used that have problems.

I have put 45,000 miles on my car. I drive it HARD but it take care of it as well. The most major thing that i have done to the car was front brake rotors turning and new pads. That's it. It has run like a top!!! I have taken it to the drag strip and Autocrossed it all in the same week!! Drove me home from both events
I'm not going to mod it that much or anything, thanks all, ill make sure to check out all the maintenance records and stay away from an automatic... that means i have to learn manual.
