Is a 90 civic ex tranny the same as an si tranny the same year. Also, do you think that an ex tranny with 120,000 miles daily driven by a friends wife still in good shape? Because he is selling it to me for 150 because he got a swap in the ex. Seem kind of fishy?
No, they are not the same, the EX tranny has a 4.05 final drive as compared to the Si's 4.25.

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldnt shorter gears have worse gas mileage than longer gears? With longer gears your going faster with less RPM's so that means the engine is turning less hence using less fuel. I still dont see them putting in a tranny with better gas mileage in a car thats suppose to be the fastest of all models?? Why put the shorter geared tranny in the EX over the Si? So then an EX tranny would be better or well faster than an Si? I mean with the gear ratio's as stated above that means that the EX has a lower top end speed but will get there faster than the Si. So say to like 85mph the EX would be faster? And these comparisons would obviously be in the same cars not like comparing a hatch to a sedan or to a coupe or something in that nature. Cause the EX's had the same motor as the Si's right?? They both had the D16A6? I thought they did but correct me if im wrong??
with a 4.05 final the car will have a higher top speed and get better gas milage cause itll be turning slower rpm at the same freeway speeds
with a 4.25 it will have quicker accelaration but a lower top speed, itll run out of rpm before it reaches the top speed the 4.05.

That's what I meant, the Si gearing is for a quicker more sporty feel, and not for gas milage. The EX has the longer gearing for better fuel economy.

so would the ex tranny be significantly slower than the si since it has a lower final? Would it kill acceleration at the strip? I just got it put in and it feels just a tad bit slower than my si tranny? What do you guys think?
First post for me, I had to comment on this since I have a dx tranny in a si crx. For me, its not worth it at all. With I/E I can barely keep up with other Si crxs. Every gear past 1st will be extremely long. Redlining 2nd gear will put you at about 85mph, 3rd doesn't even want to redline, etc. However, it does give you good mileage, running somewhere between 30-35 mpg on a 160k engine.

I coulda sworn the DX/EX trannys had the same gearing. Either way my CRX ran a 16.9 w/dx and then a 15.8 w/si. These were both with the same setup just different tranny. 15.8 with slipping clutch.

i got a DX tranny on my D16Z6..
so far i can reach about 35 mph in 1st @ 6800
65 mph in 2nd @ 6800
95 mph in 3rd @ 6800
115 mph in 4th @ 6800
and i have taken it so far to 127 mph with about 5300 rpms....
and i got VTEC xover @ 4600 and shifting from 1st to 2nd i fall out of vtec, but from 2nd and on i shift and stay on vtec......
vtec points @ 4600 are with DX tranny
1st ~ 20mph
2nd ~ 42mph
3rd ~ 62mph
4th ~ 85 mph
5th ~ 105 mph
IMO the si trans isnt as good as a ex trans the ex u get a lil more outa the gears cause once u hit the 3 rd gear in the si u top out in the quarter if u have a 15 sec car i had better times with the ex trans than with the si trans maybe its just my driving but with a 2.1 60 ft i did a 15.2 with the ex trans with the si 2.1 60 i can only do 15.4 u gota compare apples to apples cimirrelicrx were ur 60 ft times the same? also the si trans sucks *** for milage to it feels faster but it really isnt....tell him ull give him 75 for the trans cause thats what its worth i also lost mph in the 1/4 witht the si trans went down 5 mph
I kind of came to the same conclusion that I had an HF tranny after driving my crx around for a while. I knew I had a really bad feeling when I was pulling the transmission from the white DX in the junkyard. I was torn between keeping my SI transmission that had no second gear or going with a junkyard one. It is kinda nice though, running at 2500rpm in 5th around 80mph and not having to hear my exhaust screaming in the back.
