That looks like a homemae one like the one featured on the DSM site.

 

my friends use them on their turbo dodges alot... They can adjust from 6psi to over 30, depending on the spring... Works great!

 

im considering making one for my soon-to-be turbo'd car... and then making sevral more and selling them for like $10 on ebay, or locally or HT or where-ever.

its a simple design, and works i guess. just wanting to know if anyone has used one first hand, before i go off and make one for me, plus others.

 

I've been using one like that on the high boost side of my two stage boost control system. Mine looks a little different, but the theory is the same. Small ball bearing, spring, an a threaded body to adjust spring preload to tune the boost level that it opens at. It works tons better in line with the boost line, rather than as a bleeder. IMHO, this is the best type of MBC design. When you use a MBC with a spring/ball setup in line with the boost line, the wastegate gets no boost until the pressure overpowers the spring, so you get a lot more low rpm boost! With a bleed type setup, you tune it to hold boost at the desired level in a high gear, but you are tuning by an air flow through the bleed hole, not pressures. What happens is there is always air flowing through the line, and this air will crack the wastegate open long before it reaches max boost, thus reducing the low rpm or low gear boost levels. With a ball/spring in line, you build full boost before any boost gets to the wastegate. You do have to have a very small bleed hole between the MBC and the wastegate to allow the wastegate to close when you lift. It only takes a tiny hole, just enough that the wastegate snaps shut when you remove boost from it. I found that it worked best by drilling the hole at an angle, so it forms a 'Y' into the boost line. This way, flow out the hole under boost is restricted, yet the bleed off of pressure when you remove boost from the source (like lifting off the throttle) was quickest (ie. - the wastegate snaps shut quickly, allowing you to buld boost more quickly in the next gear. Also, keep all your lines as short as possible, this will help reduce boos spikes and creap.

I have used the Joe P manual boost controller, which is a ball and spring type. It works well, and holds boost exactly at where you set it at. I believe the best manual style boost controllers that i have used were the Turbo XS one's, the HP model to be exact. I am trying the dual stage manual controller now, but the HP works very well and has a fine adjustment to dial in how quickly the turbo spools up.

Not true. When experimenting with a homemade MBC, you have to be VERY careful not to overoboost and hurt something. However, the end results can be rewarding if you are successful.

Another VERY good MBC is the Hallman MBC by Buschur Racing. Us DSM fellows prefer it over the joe. p, and most think it's better, but I'm not 100% sure if either is.

dang, i just sold a 90 AWD turbo talon for 875 a lil while ago, only thing it needed was a tranny. guy slapped one on, started right up, no problems. i wish i would have pulled all the turbo parts and turbo off of it before i sold it *doh*

I blew my motor because i could not turn it up or down just stuck at 10, and one night i tried to raise the boost to 12psi, but went to 20 and blew the motor, do be care full. By the way i am not saying that suck, i am just saying it did not work for me.
