Experimental EF !!!
This is an experiment!
Hey, I'm trying to help out a friend. A friend of mine has an 89 Lx (4dr) and well it's slow as hell. He want's to make it faster for under $300 bills. I know that there are plenty of all motor things I can do for cheap on my D-series
(Z6 bottom/Y8 head) But I'm not too sure about what will work on his.
This is my question, what motor combo's work in these cars and what do you guys do with your computers (OBD 0 righ?).
This is what I was thinking.
ZC head
Y8 intake mani
LS rods
A6 pistons? (looking for about 11.5:1 comp. I'm not sure which ones)
Can I do this to his motor?
I'll post the engine code later.
Thanx for any info.

whats his motor, im thinking d15b2 which is dpfi and 92 hp with a bore and stroke of 75 x 84.5, if youo mean dohc zc head, and his motor is a sohc d, which im sure it is if its so slow, the head won't bolt up. Any vtec conversion is going to cost close to 300 just for the head. maybe go with the a6 rods. Go for some ctr pistons or d16a1 pistons. a6 pistons on the a6 rods are only 9.1:1 compression. Whats his bore & stroke? stock d16a6 is 75mm x 90mm... The intake mani will probably be something around 80-120 dollars depending on where you go. And if you wanna make a cold air intake out of pvc...thats cheap as **** and does just as good. Here's an example: http://www.geocities.com/bretq/DIY_Icebox_CAI.html

Thanks for replying!
umm yeah he has that DPFI? (Can I change this?)
It's a SOHC D series but I thought you could still bolt up a zc head?
Will a A Y8 Intake manifold fit on this head.
Any Idea what the Compression is on a1 pistons & a6 rods.
Thanks!

yeah you can replace the dpfi to mpfi. Nah the dohc zc is like a jap integra engine. equivilent to the d16a1. Yeah the y8 mani will fit on the head. That'll also require a conversion to mpfi. In this thread: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=349761 Charlie Moua says it'll give you an 11:1.8 cr...i dunno i the 1.8 is a typo or not but thats still pretty high
here is info on the mpfi swap i took from another post
needed:
I recomend getting all of these parts from an 88-91 civic EX or Si, or CRX Si (I've been told that the CRX Intake manifold doesn't flow as well, never saw proof though) There are some other options, but for simplicity, it's best to get it all from one of these. also, If you have a manual trans, get the parts from a manual trans donor car (and auto for auto) I got my parts off of Ebay, a couple of broken sensors and bad parts cost me in the long run.
1. Intake manifold with Injectors, Throtle body, and all sensors intact (Any D-series MPFI intake mani. will work, I'm told the D16Y8 has the best airflow, but the Injectors have to be 88-91)
2. Injector resistor box
3. ECU
4. Distributor (the EX/Si dizzy has an extra sensor in it that you will need)
5. engine wire harness (you'll need to steal some plugs off of this)
6. New intake manifold gasket (if the TB or any sensor gets removed, it will need a new gasket as well)
7. New Injector seals (If the new intake mani has been sitting for a period of time, the old seals will probably be dried out and leak)
8. New Cap and rotor (if you recently replaced yours, the cap, rotor, coil, and Ignitor from your old distributor will all fit the new one)
The swap is easy to do, an experianced mechanic could knock it out in less than a day. Be prepared to have your car down for a week just in case there's some bugs to work out though. You never know when you're using used parts, don't get stranded!!
The mechanical stuff is pretty basic, especially if you have a Helms manual. (I did it with a Haynes manual because I'm too cheap to buy a Helms) The only thing I can say is make sure everything is clean and seals properly. When I did the swap on my car, The bracket that holds the back of the manifold up was bent, it was pushing up on the back of the mani and it wasn't allowing the gasket to seal properly. I also had problems with my injector seals leaking and the distributor had a bad ignitor.
The part where most people struggle is the wiring, your current setup only has wires for 2 injectors, you'll need to run wires for 2 more. Also, you need to run wires for that new sensor in the distributor I mentioned above. the best write up I've seen on this is:
http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/tech/4gdxtozc.html
When I did my swap, I did all of the wiring with NO splices under the hood. Everything looks completely factory. I Just wish I took pictures of the process.

Hey thanks again. You've been a great help!
I think that c:r is exactly what I'm looking for (11:1)he can still run this on 93.
So I can't do anything with that head? (Z6?)All I can do is get the Y8 IM and maybe a header.
ohh well I shouldn't get too carried away anyway
That should helpt that lil shitbox move along
He should be able to hang with an SI(no not the new ones) with these mods
11:1 comp pistons
Y8 IM.
intake (rigged up)
header
Ohh and No it can't be stripped must retain close to factory sound and reliablility.
More suggestions are welcome

I'll sell you my blown D16Y8(00' EX) with 60k for $300 It's complete(seized bottom end/vtec head/intake manfiold & TB/flywheel).. Has all sensors working..
I'm in Allentown around 20 minutes away..
You can have the whole engine for $300. parting out i could get like $400 or so.
Let me know whats up..
