im assuming the short shifters for the civics, fit the wagon model? Is one better than another? or just the standard short shifter (20 bucks on ebay) ?

first thing i strongly recomend B&M short shifters. why because they are balanced for a more positive feel and ive heard of rare cases of other brand breakin off right below the ****. the b'n'm will give you a 40-60 percent shorter though and wont feel notchy like other brands. second why do you need anything for a wagon. kind of a lost cause in my opinion. just my 16 cents

This is SlowCivicHatch posting under my girlfriend's user name. I have an APC short shifter, and although I really hate APC thier products, the short shifter is really pretty decent. It is a true short shifter. But it also feels like you have a really heavy shifter..........like that found in a Supra. Trust me, I used to have a 3rd gen Supra.

Stay away from any shifter made of aluminum. The aluminum weakens when subjected to heat... such as that coming off the exhaust piping. They tend to snap.

Billet steel is what the B&M is made of I think... I have a Skunk2 and have had no problems. OBX snapped after 5 months.

$26 eBay shifter owns. A good friend installed mine this past weekend with help from a lift. My Si is my beater, so I won't be railin' through the gears. But, yeah, if you intend to race or plan to shift quickly, avoid aluminum.

Im using a DC SS and its no good. I miss shifts more often, than with OE shifter the throw feels so much stiffer, and it didnt even fit in the shift linkage with the washers. Poorly designed.

I just replaced my old cheap-o SS with a Hurst (bought for $35 sale from Titanium motorsports see best buys forum) and the difference is just amazing. The design uses the OEM bushing/o-ring connection at the fork instead of bearings which I thing is better. The ***** are perfect. I had problems I thought were bad syncros and they are gone. It was the play at the bearing clearance which made the shifts rough. It's also made of hard AL probably T6. One thing I did do though was polish the pivot ball because the anodized surface was a bit rough. Bottom line get something without bearings.

if your 4wd wagon is oem 4wd then the shifter and all of its components will be in the cabin of the car so they won't experience much heat via the exhaust...so aluminum will be fine.

I know that there are alot of short shifters out there that are crap but damn, are really shifting that hard that you are breaking them? ive seen a lot of threads on various forums showing breakage of short shifters.... My opinion is if your hitting the gears that hard you cant drive. there is no reason to be hitting your shifter that hard during shifting. This may explain some of the synchro failures out there... I like the analogy of guns dont kill people, people kill people to synchros. That had me laughin my *** off.

Uhm yeah ok I "can't drive" I guess it couldn't be because its a shitty shifter eh?
That shifter just wasn't made to go for many many laps around the track.

I'm going B&M this year mabey Hurst.

My OBX snapped going into 3rd @ the 1/4 as well. Ticked me off BAD.

Anyways, I'm sure some people do shift harder than needed, BUT just being aggressive with it is all it takes. There really isn't as much force needed to snap one as many people think. Those of you who have snapped shifters know what I'm *trying* to explain.

I have a DC short shifter I bought off a local on this board. It works perfect, I NEVER miss a shift, and if feels good. I have put over 30,000 miles with this shifter and I like it. Missing shifts id a driver problem, not a short shifter problem. And for you guys that break off shifters, you are abusing your transmission. Do you treat your personal gearshift like that, I think not. Don't beat on your trans any harder than you beat on the gearshift you was born with. Crisp clean and deliberate wins races not thrashing things withing an inch of their life.

Hey you said it, not me. Damn Canadian. I never meant to flame you or single you out though man, I was just lending my 2 cents to the subject. I have many videos of people driving SCCA events, touring events, Rally etc, and they are straight BALLING out compared to what you were probably doing and yet they are hitting thier gears with the finesse of Anna Kournakova. (everybody say Yum) I had the oppurtunity of driving a friends weekend warrior dragger one time after begging him to let me run it because I weigh 100lbs less than him and I promised him a better time than his best of a 12.36. The end result after 2 runs was a 12.41 (first run) and a 12.22. I told him I used his shift points and I didnt slam gears like he did. He tried a run without slamming gears and ran a 12.29. After that no more slamming gears.

Well I bought mine used off of SuperCivic a year ago, So it was used when I put it in. I have never regetted it even for a minute. But then I am not a person who abuses their synros either . Guys who slam shift their cars should not be surprised when the syncros go south. THey were never designed for that kind of abuse. And as far as broken shifters go, I would guess 1 out of 20 that breaks is because of defects, the rest are from abuse.
