Default B&M Short Shifter Owners! I found a fix for the mysterious Rattle!

Well ever since I bought my B&M Short Shifter, it rattled like a rattle snake.

Things I checked
- If shifter was hitting the heatshield(never even close)
- Play around with different bushings on the Collar Joint (Part 12).

So today, I decided to try something different and I'm not surprised the rattles are gone.

The rattles are caused by the collar joint hitting up against the inside of the shift lever because there are no bushings or plastic sleeves to reduce the friction (metal to metal contact)

B&M cheaped out and made it fit on CRX, Civics, Integras. Now if they made the bottom peice the same as OEM it would not rattle.

Here is how to fix, these parts came off your OEM shifter.

Install one of these on the collar joint (Part 5) ( BUSH, RR. JOINT)
On the other side, install one of these (O-RING (11X1.9) (Part 24)

Line it up with the shift linkage and install the bolt and nut, tighten up real hard.

That should be it, and now it won't rattle anymore.

( ) <-- Insert 1 BUSH, RR. JOINT (part 5) onto right side of Collar

[] <-- Insert 1 O-RING (11X1.9) (Part 24) onto the left side of Collar

Line up in the shift linkage. Run bolt through the collar/shift linkage, and tighten bolt really tight.

I took it out for a spin, and with WOT the rattles were not evident as before.

If you have any questions, ask!

12mm socket wrench and 12mm wrench is all you need, besides supporting your car on jackstands.

Someone a while ago suggested using the stock bushings with the B&M bushings (stock bushings on the outside, B&M on the inside). It's an extremely tight fit, but it works. Grease the hell out of the metal collar bushing while you're at it. I used lots of Valvoline all-purpose grease. Then tighten down the bolt and nut together as tight as you can. I have no rattles AT ALL after 3 months...not a single peep.

So basically, what cured my rattle was either generously packing the collar joint with better grease, using both stock and B&M bushings, or a combination of both.

But keep in mind, my rattle was nowhere near as bad as other B&M owners. Mine rattled on occasion while others would rattle violently all the time.

yea, what i did was re-use part 4 and put it on each side of 12 with the red b&m bushings on the inside. this method solved all the loud rattles but there were still some small rattles, but not loud. the final method that i used to solve it was i ordered a skunk2 shifter. PROBLEM SOLVED

I had done the same thing, but the rattles were more violent compared to what I did now.

silverb18c1: spending another $100 ain't worth it just for the rattles. But now I'm happy with the B&M.

Seriously? You raised an 8-year old thread?

Does your short-shift rattle? Check out your bushings.

B&M short shifters come with an install manual. READ IT!!! weirdos.... noOOobz..... hahahaaaa!! just kiddin.

and.... WTF am I doing here? just researching on the o-rings.

Installed: 1-15-2011

edit:1-17-011

i replaced all OEM O-rings with B&M O-Rings. OEM rings seem to fit better but i figured, since ive gone this far, midas well go the extra step. guess not!

im having vibration noise after install also. it comes and goes. this all depends on how much the engine is shaking. if im at a steady speed, the vibration noise is gone. if im shifting through gears, the vibration noises are present.

my shifter is sitting way above the heat shield and the exhaust. i might have to take some measurements and purchase some nylon sleeves in replace of the rubber O-Rings that b&m provided.
