Gee another billion dollars wasted. At least it wasn't in America this time... Remember the V-8's with stand-by mode for half the cylinders? Another ingenius idea out of the western world...

I assume this one doesn't kick in only at WOT? So I guess if I had the alternator out of a semi it might work.

you're pretty harsh for someone who gets off on paper tigers like multiple turbo systems on 4 bangers.

that actually sounds pretty nice. Keep in mind this is not a fan in the intake tube.. Its actually being built to make boost.

Technically it IS for power - but it's being applied as a fuel economy boost... the idea being, you can make the exact same torque curve (not just the same peak hp) on a 1.6L vs. a 2.0L engine if you use an electric compressor to boost the low-end torque on the 1.6. Pressure is low, so no special measures have to be taken to protect the engine; the units can reach full boost in a fraction of a second, so there's no lag associated with it. Basically you just get the same power in a smaller, lighter engine package that uses 15-20% less fuel. Makes sense to me.

Of course I design these things for a living (for a different company), so I'm a little biased. (Just for reference, I did a quick dyno test with one of our units on an LS teg and it made an easy 15-20 ft.lb. boost in low-midrange torque without even having a chance to tune the fuel).

If they try to get better fuel economy with dino fuel they should do it in the combustion chamber where the actual flaws in the design are at. I've seen 17:1 with a 350 chevy on pump gas. I think it's safe to say where the designing needs to be done. Instead of wasting time and money with that plastic crap (that will take years to even make dent in the polutants) they should redesign the actual chambers to burn cleaner and more efficiently.
Not trying to be a *****, but the car manufactures are in it for the money not the enviroment. If your rich your isolated from all the BS that normal people have to go through. They don't worry about pollutants or gas mileage. Trust me I come from a very wealthy family. I don't talk to them anymore because the money isn't what I want, and they only want the money.
The rich get richer and poor get poorer. All those rich people party together. They like coke for some reason. Doesn't do anything for me.

. I like their GM modular engine read also. Was a very good read though. I was interested in the dual-charger because Lancia has done it with success and it seemed like a good way to make a D-series compete in the Outlaw class because they allow two power adders and I'm not a fan of the giggle juice. I had a bad experience with it. I'd also like to RWD my new '87. I just bought another one three weeks ago. Now I have three, yippie. I like them.
Sorry I got off on the wrong foot with you Falcon. Oh dual-charge as in supercharger and turbo. I wouldn't twin turbo a honda what would be the point? Afro-puff was into the twin turbo route.

Why would this not work? I have been wondering this for years. Isn't boost the same reguardless of how it is produced?

In the case of superchargers it takes power to make power. If the amount of power you make from the charger is less then the amount of power it takes to run the charger, then you lose horsepower.

for example:
-200HP engine
-A supercharger that takes 50 HP from the engine to power it
-In return the supercharger gives you an additional 30 horsepower
-overall you are losing power

(200 - 50) + 30 = 180 HP

get it? in order for any supercharger or electriccharger to really be effective it has to make make more power than it consumes.

EDIT: BTW my numbers about are just exagerated numbers, so that you can better understand what I'm talking aobut.

I disagree, the manufactures do care about the environment. It's the people who are tight bugeted that can't aford to pay extra for energy conserving and more environenvironmentally friendly products. Just look at Honda, for example.

Instead of being a bunch of jerk-offs like American manufactures, spending billions of dollars on trying to make their SUVs appeal more to women drivers who can't drive in the first place, Honda has chose to make their cars more fuel efficient and spend their money towards researching ways to make their cars less fuel dependent.
For example, the Hybrid.

ALL SUVS AND SUV DRIVERS MUST DIE!!!!

Okay, maybe we can keep the drivers, LET'S JUST KILL THEIR CARS
