identifying type-r cylhead
would there be a stamp# on the head or anything else to identify it.
something to distinguish from a regular b16a head.
what do i need to look for?
just asking , im taking a look at one this weekend, i thought i read a post on here p73 would be stamped on the block internals, not to sure about the head, nobody mentioned it.
all feedback welcome.
thanx

yes it HAS been mentioned before.
no p73 on the head anywhere.
check for portwork near the valve seats.
check the intake valve stems to see if they are deshrouded near the head.
check for green paint on the distributor mounting leg
otherwise you wont know.

My friend just got his Itr head from the dealership and it doesnt have the green paint, but it does have minor porting. I thought the green paint only came with heads that were originally on the cars.

All the ITR heads I have (new and used) have the green paint.

Mines was replaced under warranty. There was no green paint marking. I was told when they reassemble the head, they hot tanked it. Therefore, no green paint.
more than likely they just cleaned it. but even a good spray of brake cleaner will
wipe the paint cleanoff
Okay giving the head is a replacement from the dealer. The true way to find out is get a stock ITR intake manifold gasket and line it up against the head and see if it matches. That way you know it's an ITR. PR3 means nothing. A good dealer won't rip you off. I do know some that has been foul. good luck.
always get the head new, or from a well trusted person.
and if you cant identify the things SGT mentioned, then dont get it.
also if its in front of you, check for dual springs, maybe even pop out the reetainer and weigh it on a digi scale, measure the intake valve diamiter if you wanna get really technical.

and to the next guy, you arent gonna be able to tell by retainer weight.
Valves & Retainers != cylinder head. Anybody can slap on Type-R cams, valves, springs, retainers onto a stock B16A head, so you can't tell by examining those parts. May I ask why you need to distinguish between a B16A and Type-R head anyway? They flow precisely the same, despite the mild porting. Don't believe me? Look at the flowcharts from Alaniz Tech...

for the same reason mentioned orignally-locals selling one, i wanted to check if its the real deal or not, some people sell them for quite abit of money.
i know theyre the same cast - but in this case it was a complete barehead just wanted to ask, to know what things to look for, like what sgt stated and some of the others.
thanx for the chart man, youre right - found that interesting
many thanx to those who responeded, greatly appreciated
