Is it just me or do all accord motors have that rod knock/ piston slap sound?
You know that knock the motor makes under a load before fully warmed up.
Kinda that diesel sound, but way less noticable as it is not a diesel obviously.
Just me or what?

p.s. not the valve light click noise either, I know the difference and adjust my valves constantly.
use some synthetic (like 1 quart worth in a oil change). I do and in 132k miles I have no lash and/or valve-train noise...
frequent oil changes are a must
edit: I just realized that this car has also never had it's valves adjusted. Ever.

No diesel noises here. Nice and smooth sounding even when cold
. I know what you're talking about though. My moms '94 Accord EX (~167k) makes some noises when it's cold similar to what you describe. She had a valve lash adjustment not too long ago as well and it still does it, so I guess that's just the way those motors are. Still runs great though, and it doesn't seem to be hurting anything.

same sound on my 93, I've got a bit over 250,000 miles but I don't remember it doing it back when it had like 40K or so. Doesn't seem to be causing any problems, yet...
this is very normal, the f-series motors are known as "sewing machine motors" and they are heard better when its cold outside. its not my valves either since i had them adjusted like 5k ago and barely hit 5krpm in my car(i dont need to).
its normal, but it IS annoying.

mine did that **** and got progressivley worse. got to the point the car shut off while driving. i did oil change after oil change. thicker oil... blah blah blah. didnt work!

So, even though its "ok" for the engine to make the sound, is there anything we can do (besides adjusting the valves so they dont fully close) to make it stop or quiet? Like, newer F's dont do it right? so, a completely new valve train? excessive, but would it even do it? Is the soarce of the sound known?
just my brain wandering... Merry Christmas everyone!

if you adjust the valves too much, you will get horrible gas mileage...not worht it.
even some h22's make this noise too

Thats because you blew your motor up, your problem doesn't go for everyone else
forgot I started this thread.
YES YOU TURD I KNOW WHAT ROD KNOCK SOUNDS LIKE. I have broken enough motors to know. Its not that loud obviously or I think I would know it is a serious problem instantly.
Yeah and ps I have 85k miles.

I wouldnt describe the normal sounds of a honda motor as rod knock. If you disagree thats fine. But rod knock is usually a term to describe a problem.
*clank, clank, cla-clank, clank*
oh yeah thats some smooth idle sound there, LOL

I adjusted the valve lash but that didn't seem to help. Oh well. I hope it's nothing serious. The car still runs better than ever.
Nevermind, it was just a quick description of a FAINT LIGHT noise I hear intermitently at low rpm under a load.
This is moot anyway, I just pulled the motor for sleeves... thanx.
ps. yes your a turd, go be overly critical with some other thread.

all engines sound different when they are cold due to lack of oil circulation. my car sounds like just what it is.... a 4cyl once it has warmed up, it is much quieter. takes a few mins but no big deal...
The sound you hear is most likely just a little piston shake. In extreme cases it is harmful, but a little while cold is ok. Both my 91 Accord and my 98ITR sound quite different while cold than once warmed up, but both have the sewing machine sound as well. My 3.2 is a whole different story though, nothin but purrs out of that engine, but to date I only have 1265.8 miles on it. It's still on it's break-in oil.
What exactly do these sound like? ticks? slaps? knocking sounds?
I hear ticking sounds when i drive sometimes, definately more frequently at night when it is cold... what can it be and what are possible fixes?
First car for me so I dont know what rod knock/piston slap/valve ticking sounds like so im not certain where to start.

it basically sounds like a faint sewing machine noise, hence the "sewing machine" motor. to make sure its not your valves, rev up your car VIA throttle cable in engine bay and listen to the head for valve noises. if there is no noise coming from that specific region, you are ok. i think the sewing machine noise is due to noisy fuel injectors, like the integras. i work at a honda dealership and accords with over 50k miles and with a recent valve adjustment all make that noise. its normal.
