that thing looks like it crosses the boundry of actually working properly.
it would create lotsa downforce but huge drag. so i mean hes prolly gaining nothing...

i was reading how F1 racers adjust and design the wings on there cars. they use a wind tunnel and the area of minimizing drag and maximizing drag is very small.
i cant see how that piece of sheet metal would work unless its been tested in a wind tunnel and measured.

 

is that guys serious? is that guy your friend or did you just see him? that is just mean to do that to a beautiful car.

If you read the article in nsxfiles, you'll see that it was quite effective, dropping quite a bit of the lap times. It may be crude and I'm sure it can be improved, but the basic idea worked well.

I don't know the guy...just saw it on the freeway and thought it was ugly. But if it works for him, more power to him.

There's never enough time to get things built right - I had wanted to do more with it but ran out of time. It sure did work well. I was going to take it off as soon as I got back from the track, just been too lazy to put the red trunklid back on.

It's coming off in the next day or two to be replaced by a much bigger, but hopefully prettier, rear wing.

For all you poo-poo'ing on the "looks" keep in mind that is a -> spare <- trunk lid Jason rigged the spoiler up on.

 

Hey Jason good to see that you went ahead with the wing, so any dents in the rear truck that we all were predicting about, or no chance for a high speed run yet.

 

Had it up to 130+ the night I installed it, with no problems. I figured it'd never see that kind of speed on the track, so that was enough of a proving.

When I pulled off the lower two brackets a couple days ago I noticed the bolt holes had elongated a tiny tiny bit. Probably more force than should be transmitted laterally through the metal. Other than that everything is hunky-dory.

I think you're going to see lots of spoilers and wings at future SpeedVentures events.

 

Well jason to keep up with you they are going to need quite a bit more then a big wing, but looks like you had fun with it though.

I may be wrong but I don't think you can gather enough spped to create any useful downforce. I'd be willing to be that the positive effects you sensed were more a product of drag than downforce. You effectively created an always on "air brake."

If you really want to do something worthwhile. Fabricate an underbody panel with two or three scoops to create the Bernoulli(sic) effect.

 

I autocross in stock class, precluding the use of nonstandard aero stuff. This also means that track-only mods are limited to things that can be put on/taken off easily.
The effects would certainly be smaller at autocross speeds. But in talking with a few folks, a couple of which are/were national champions in their respective classes, the ducktail spoiler does help around the cones.

A stock S2000 is known to generate approximately 88 pounds of lift in the rear at 100mph. This lift is the result of the low pressure region created over the trunklid while at speed. The spoiler reduces that lifting. For more information on the effect of spoilers of this type check out the SAE papers referenced in Katz's <U>Race Car Aerodynamics: Designing for Speed</U> or Milliken & Milliken's <U>Race Car Vehicle Dynamics</U>.

This reduction in lift does come with a drag penalty. But at the track, speed through and exiting the corners is everything. If you are able to exit a corner carrying 5mph more speed, it more than makes up for 5mph less acceleration down the straight. At a higher speed track I'd probably run the spoiler at a lower angle of attack - at the low speed Streets of Willow, I saw no need to adjust it.

I wanted to go faster around the racetrack, and built something to help do so. To me, anything to be faster (within my rulesets) is worthwhile. A rear underbody diffuser would be great, but the rear bumper cover isn't something that can easily be swapped out. The trunklid takes 3 minutes to change.

The wing I'm building to use at Laguna Seca next month will be quite a bit more dramatic. I urge you guys to come out an attend a real track day. The group I run with, SpeedVentures (http://www.speedventures.net), is hosting 2 days at Sears Point and 2 days at Laguna Seca next month. They're a great group, and it's always a lot of fun.

Ummm okay, did you not read the whole thread? He still has his stock trunk unmolested. He just uses this for the track!
