Default V-TEC Kicking in when it's cold and compression test times....

Hey guys, I own a 1999 Type-R (from Canada of course) and I was just wondering if you guys had any input on this....

When I start my car after its been sitting in the cold for a while, and I don't give my engine enough time to warm up, and I take it past 5700 rpm, I don't hear V-TEC kick in, however, when it's warmed up after a while, and I take it past 5700 rpm again, V-TEC kicks in no problem?? Does this happen to you guys, and/or do you guys know why this is happening or if it's normal??

And my other question was, I took my car recently for a compression test, I think Type-R's brand new are 200-210, but mine came out to an average of 180-185.
Acura said it was fine of course, especially for a 1999, but I dunno some people still say it shoudl be around 200. Could this be why my V-TEC isn't kicking in when the engine is cold, or is this the normal test results for this year??

Also do you guys notice that your Type-R's fuel consumption is a lot more than normal Integras??

The fact that VTEC will not engage when the engine is cold is perfectly normal. In fact, when the engine is cold enough that the ECU disables VTEC, you shouldn't be reving to 5700 anyway. Give the engine some time to warm up before spinning it so high. As for the compression test, as long as all the cylinders are basically showing even-sqeeze, you shouldn't have a problem unless they are ridiculously low - which yours are not. The numbers can vary depending on the way the test is conducted and certain other variables, and every C5 will not show the same compression test numbers. HTH

Will it cause damage if I rev my engine up past 5700rpm when its cold, cuz I have done that a few times to test V-TEC when it was cold. Never again now that I know this!! hehe Thanks dude!!

Maybe the low compression is caused by your VTEC attempts at low oil temps......

Make sure car is warm before going into Vtec!!!!! Try not to go over 3000 rpms before the car has reached good temp.

So when I say I've got an average of 180-185, it's fine for my 1999 Type-R, considering its 3 years old?? Or does it tell me that its bad and the previous owner beat the hell out of it??

As long as the numbers are close together you don't have a problem....Does seem a little low from what Honda says you should have.

well those numbers are definetly low. But the fact that your compression numbers are low doesnt have anything to do with vtec not working when your car is not warm. You have to warm your car up until you build up enough oil pressure. Look at your temp guage and once it hits the first notch thats when your good to go for vtec. And yes type R's will go threw more gas then regular integras. They also naturally burn a bit of oil especially if your running synthetic, so keep an eye on your oil ben. hit me up on msn if u have any questions!!!!!

You don't beleive in warming up your car???

Compression is fine aslong as they are close to each other.

You gotta get your car up to temp before you start revving. Stay below 3.5K or so until the temp is up. What prohibits VTEC engagement is low oil temp, which is not related to the temp guage to the left of your speedo. Just make sure your car has been warmed up for some time in this cold weather. It could be damaging to rev up high like that while the car is cold.
