Light weight battery question
Im not getting much luck in the ITR forum so I figure somebody in here has to know
I just purchased a battery DMS Technology battery from a friend of mine.
I dont have any HEAVY electronics in my car. I do have AC and I have an RSX spare tire subwoofer powered by an INTERNAL amp (only weighs ~8lbs).
Will my battery be able to power my vehicle?
Here are some specificaitons:
C/10 Capacity/Ah: 13 (WTF is this?!)
Dimensions: L 176mm (6.9") x W 84mm (3.3") x H 130mm (5.1")
Weight: 4.9Kg = 10.78 lbs (but I have this picture to proove its 11.0lbs
)

since this is autox/rr forum where most of the time lightweight batteries are not an option, i think more ppl will be interested in that nifty electronic scale you got... how much capacity does it have? say, 600lbs?
(no, i doubt it would...)

AFAIK, once the car is running, it is the alternator that powers the car. The question really then is, will that battery start your car?

Im sure itll start it, its 12volts. BTW, whats AFAIK?
See if the battery spec's have a CA or CCA (most common) or HCA or something like that. The CA is obviously cranking amps, CCA/HCA is the rating at an industry standard cold and hot temperature.
That first spec is the capacity rating in amp-hours, basically it is 13Ah. A constant current discharge of 1.3 amps for 10hrs before the battery reaches 10.2 volts. Kinda involved to explain all this. Look here, this guy did great research:

This would have probably come up in a search, I remember posting this link in this forum a few months ago.
All this being said, I know the Hawker/Odesssey/Dynabatt/etc. are capable of turning over Mustang 5.0's, E36 M3's, Audi S4's and Honda's. You may want to compare the specs of the DMS (which looks suspiciously like a Hawker). In which case if they are similar, it should work.
Like everyone said, ones your running the alt. is taking care of things. Just don't sit around without the engine running playing the radio, running lights/accessories, etc. That will drain the battery and if long enough you won't be able to turn over the motor.

X,
Thats some good information. I appreciate your elaborate response. I found it its 360 cranking amps.
Here is more information on the batteries.

IK've had a Hawker Odessey PC680 (14lbs) in my '99 Prelude for 2 seasons. Starts the car reliably on first crank. Don't let it sit with accessories on though when the car isn't running, or keep it in your car if the temps drop drastically.
Well if you are in the right class then they are an option...
Here's one that's similar in weight to the one posted by Migs, but has greater output and is only $85.

just curious, but how much weight difference is there between OEM and this one?

The "C" refers to the capacity of the battery, but when used as "C/10" it means that at a discharge rate of 1.3A (13/10) you will get a battery capacity of 13Ah...if you discharge it at a higher rate, say C/5 you would have a battery capacity that is lower - it has to do with the internal resistance of the cell, basically the cells construction. The battery industry uses the "C/10" rate as a standardization so you can really compare between different cells.

I use a light wieght battery also, it starts the car up every time. Never use your car as a radio without the engine being on thoug, the smaller batteries will go dead much faster than OEM type.
57STS: Which battery are you running? I'm looking at a GenisisG16EP/OdesseyPC680 to run in my 00 Prelude next year. Any problems cranking your Prelude with the battery? Also how long has it lasted so far? I've heard that these are normally only good for 1-2 yrs max in automobiles...
I think this will make a huge difference on a Prelude because we have that big 40lb stock battery right up in the very front of the engine bay...
