JRSC GSR needs 2.5" catback. Suggestions?
I tried searching but it came up with no responses...
I'm running a 6psi JRSC GSR. Most people I've talked to say to run 2.5" exhaust for it, since a 3" would be overkill still for the JRSC at 6psi.
I might eventually bump it to 8 or 9psi, no more tho.
Im trying to get a good full header, cat, exhaust setup done all at once since im robbing myself of a lot of power runnin FI with stock H/E. Also my stock header has an annoying rattle in the A pipe so it needs to go anyways.
I want it relatively quiet or at least low tone with good response.
I'm thinking
Header
Kamikaze or DC JDM 4-1 (both have 2.5" collector)
The kamikaze's have the best rep for power gains on JRSC GSR's, but I've heard of horrible problems with the gasket blowing out on em, and having to custom weld on a support bracket for them to fit right.
Cat
2.5" carsound or random tech (any other suggestions / know of any good deals for either?)
Custom 2.5" piping w/ resonator is like $150 at midas or any muffler shop around here pretty much so thats gonna go in for sure from the cat to muffler.
And here's the biggest problem. The muffler.
Most are either 2.25" NA mufflers or 3" turbo mufflers.
I dont want to bottleneck it with a 2.25 after the larger exhaust everywhere else.
But would a 3" turbo (IE thermal axleback or apexi turbo muffler) cause anything negative in power gains or anything since it will bump up from 2.5" piping all the way to 3" slowing down the exhaust gasses at this point? Or would the effect not really be noticable if i put on the 3" axleback turbo muffler? Also, i've seen many universal mufflers with 2.5" inlets, but im afraid they'll just be loud and annoying ones like most ricer exhausts. I dont want a popping sound or bumble bee sound and an annoying drone on the freeway like in my friends cars (tanabe exhausts, n1, fireball which are all small canister exhausts)
Any JRSC GSR's out there with any suggestions?
I also am trying to keep my car looking as stock as possible (dont want to get stolen/keeping it clean). Anyone ever think of finding a car that has a stock larger muffler than runs 2.5 or so exhaust, and fitting it on a teg or would that be a horrible idea? (im just tossing out things in my head thinking of ways to make a quiet larger exhaust setup)
thanks,
Martin

if you want unrestricted exhaust, it will be loud.. oval mufflers will give it low tone, and unrestricting resonators will improve the sound, and you want it to have mandrel bends, not crush bends.

i know im going to need a big canister to keep the muffler tone low, but i dont want a huge 4 or 5" tip like most aftermarket exhausts.
Thats why im lookin for suggestions for a good large canister exhaust but smaller tip and not the tiny canister ones like fireball and N1 etc.

What kind of car do you have?
I can't stand a load exhaust either, I have a Mugen cat back and a Kamakazi header, I put down 267 to the wheels and it is quiet.
Don't believe evreything you hear, 2.5" can hadle 350 crank horse power.

Im in the same boat.
Isnt the Mugen catback 60.5mm? If thats the case, for 9PSI, am I better of running my Apex'i RS @ 60mm? I dont want a loud exhaust either, but if I'll see gains from it, I want to go for it. Kamikaze is definitely going in...thanks for the tip on the other thread about the gasket. This is on a 95 GSR as well.
How much does mandrel bent piping usually run at a Joe blow exhaust shop?

I have a Greddy PE catback and I like it a lot. It has 60mm piping until the muffler section, where it goes to 70mm. The muffler is a round straight through type, but is around 12" in diameter (not like the N1).
This is combined with a 2.25" straight pipe and a Kami header. It is relatively tame when cruising around, but very loud when you get on it.
I think the most important thing for a good sounding exhaust is a large resonator after the cat. Without that, it will have the bumlebee/fartcan sound.
I'd recommend:
DC 4-2-1 header (the Kami's rep for power is way overstated and the blown gaskets are a pain in the ***).
2.5" Carsound cat.
60mm or 2.5" mandrel piping.
Use a small straight through turbo muffler as a resonator.
Any 60mm/2.5" straight through muffler with a big can (i.e. not like the N1).

Nick,
We`ve had a few made and they always end up being less than brand _____ catback. Plus, you can choose muffler/tip and the direction (straight/angle/etc.) it faces.

i used a tanabe racing medallion (2.5) and its loud! those ES mufflers look stock.. and ive heard they are a bit loud, but a deep tone. i got 2.5 piping too... and a gutted cat.
For mandrel bend D.I.Y. exhausts , look for "VRS exhausts", they are in the back of most of the Sports compact type mags. They sell all the pipe except the muffler for like $100-$150, they have mild steel and stainless. They come with hangers etc.
You will still have to run a resanater to quieten it down some, Blowers sure make you exhaust load. You should hear a 3 " thermal , they sound like nothing you have heard before.

im thinkin bout getting a 2.5" ES muffler. Its one of the few universal mufflers i've seen that come in a 2.5" version that have a large oval canister instead of the small n1 style canisters which are known to cause loud/ricer bumblee sound.
Anyone tried the ES 2.5"?
Anyone tried the ES 2.5"?
after doin a bit more research, ive found a general consensus from people that ES mufflers sound like crap.

Anyone ever used a Dynomax Super Turbo 2.5" Muffler?
