Default questoin about single cam head swap

I have the stock si engine(d16a6 I believe) and I want to somewhat build the motor up so I was wondering how hard it is or if its even worth changing the head to the vtec head (d16z6 or d16y8) how long would It take and how tough? please help thanx.

Well here in Canada you can get everything you need for about 500-600CAN at most.

Need vtec head
head bolts
gaskets
RPM activated switch
etc....

You can probably get a decent Z6 for that much, at least here in Toronto area I see them for like 400CAN or less.

to do it right you would end up spending more like 500, it depends on your hook ups i suppose, here is my list

y8 ecu: 75
y8 head: 200
y8 harnesses: 135
y8 dizzy: 75
thats 485 right there, not to mention that a full obd2 conversion...I plan to do a gsr cluster swap too, thats about 60

yikes i forgot the other stuff

head bolts: 60
steel gasket: ~20
IM gasket: ~10

so i suppose it does get up there

i was figuring
head - 200
intake mani/tb - 150
gaskets (for injectors/tb to main/exhaust/intake to head/ blah blah blah..) 100+
timing belt -30
second internet order so you have to pay extra shipping because you forgot stuff the first time - extra shipping 15 + parts cost.
water pump - 30
shop to break crank pully bolt - min charge 25
fuel hose from filter to fuel rail - 10
zdyne 1 wire ecu - 335 (thats about where mine hit the 1000 mark)
and dont forget going to the j-yard or parts store for misc. parts.. it adds up after a while

but it can be done for less.

omg u guys are the people my friends love!... you pay way too much for pitty **** ****.. you can get a rpm switch head with everythign u need for like 250-350... **** paying a grand for that ****.. or just buy a z6 for 400 and swap it in and then pay 160 and get a 0bd-0 - obd 1 jumper and get a ecu.. just search and you can find alot of stuff cheap!

Yes, you can actually do this for very cheap. I spent like 400 total the first time i did this. You pay for what you get.

But, in this case.. its getting it done RIGHT thats going to cost you. Me being the cheap guy, it ran like crap. The MSD RPM activated switch method is probably the easiest and cheapest route to go. But, it just doesnt feel right. Without the p28, the stock ECU just wont be able to compensate for the added fuel needed for the higher lift and longer duraction of the vtec lob. It may cost up to a 1000 to get it running right, which really isnt all that impressive. Get the whole d16z6.

you can say i paid too much.. but i did it the way i wanted to.

i could have gotten an entire d16y8 motor for 300 - ecu / harness, everything.

doing the head swap and doing it what i considered "right" is the way i wanted to go.

to each his own.

300?!?!!?

Why not just throw the whole engine in there??? Like ghettocrxsi said you can do the whole sohc vtec swap for a little more than the head swap, and have it done right running off of an p28 ecu. And trust me, those sohc vetc enigine swaps can usually outrun the mini-me's pretty easily. I've seen it time and time again.

well using a y8 gasket and having proper fuel management a mini me will run about 11:1. I suspect putting my 112 hp stock motor up in the high 120s if not low 130s.
