Default oil light???

just a quick question. when i start up my b16 in the morning the oil light stays on longer than the others, some times it flickers once. anyone have this happen? is it because of the cold? is it normal?

I asked the same question in the tech forum, although mine goes off pretty soon and I think I am just pairnoid. If your stairs on really long or longer when its cold then you could have low oil pressure. You could always get a gauge and hook it up just to be on the safe side.

how long has it been like this? have you changed oil filters since you've had this problem? What weight oil are you running?

you don't happen to be using a fram-type oil filter, do you?
need more info, but the valve thingy on your filter may be letting the oil drain back when you shut it off.

BTW, my stock si d16a6 doesn't give an oil light unless I just changed the oil.

My oil light used to go on if I'm just sitting there at idle after a while. Later I found out that my radiator fan wasn't working.

so you've had this problem while you have had various oil filters installed, not just this one? Apparantly, the fram bypass system isn't great. I'll try to find a link that may change your mind about oil filter selection.

stock honda apparantly isn't great either.

that NTPOG site has good reviews on oil filters. I am considering using Mobil 1/bosch/stp (basically the same except filter material on mobil1 is better...read on that site), Amsoil (there national headquarters is really close to me, and they looked fairly good), or Wix/napa gold (which is the only other accepted filter for cummins or dodge otherwise it voids your warranty, according to my dad)

to answer your question about why fram is bad quickly, they seem to be made of cheap materials (such as paper end caps for the filter media and a poor quality bypass valve that can be gotten to stick easily). Also, according to some site, the loose paper/adheasive from the filter was proven to cause damage to his engine.

I didn't mean to give you a heartattack, infact, I have a fram right now. However, I will be switching next oil change.

but if your problem has occured with more than one oil filter, this will likely not be your problem.

it is hard for me to say, I haven't made up my own mind yet. I am in now way a filter expert, infact, I haven't disassembled one yet. My knowledge is just from what I read.

With that out of the way, here is a great link (the best imo) about oil filters: http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

From some more reading, I think I'll probably be using wix/napa gold filters in the future. http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/o...y/image022.gif
or amsoil once I read more about it.

i use mobil 1 filter and never got an oil light.
i now have an oil pressure guage and right when i start up my engine the guage goes straight to around 60 (it's been a while so it's just a guess) no delay at all

basic test, if the filter is really heavy when you take it off.. the drainback valve is good, also if you can hold it upside down like your pouring the oil out and only a little comes out and it still feels really heavy like there is still a lot of oil in it.. the valve is good.

my filter is always heavy and very little if no oil drains out of it on each oil change.
