Installing Brake Rotors
Has anyone done this? I'm replacing my pads and rotors, but was only able to get the pads done today. Since I don't have my Auto Tech class until the end of winter break (we get back on the 2nd of Jan.), It looks like i'll have to do it myself (don't wanna take it to the shop). Are these relatively easy to do? I've done work on brake pads before, but not the rotors. Should I spend the money to buy a Helms manual?
I just did pads and rotors this past weekend, pretty easy really. Mine is a 96 accord. the hardest part was seperating the hub from the steering arm, it gets real rusted, I used penetrating oil, let it soak, and used a rubber mallet to get it started, then just pry it apart from the back. Definetly get a manual so you can get everything torqued down right. and a 36mm socket for the hub nut, with a big *** breaker bar or pipe to get some leverage.
before jacking up the car and removing the wheel, pop off the hub/center cap of the wheel and use an awl or small flathead screwdriver and a hammer and unstake the axle nut. Use an impact gun or a 1/2'' breaker bar to remove the axle nut. Now you may jack up the car and remove the wheel. remove the two 17mm bolts holding the brake caliper in place. slide out the caliper.remove pads, why am i typing all of this since you already know how to do this part, remove the two 17mm bolts holding the caliper bracket to the main hub assembly. pull out cotter pin on upper ball joint, remove 17mm nut, pull out cotter pin on steering arm nut and remove 17mm nut. pull out cotter pin on lower ball joint and remove 17mm nut. use a fairly large mallet to knock out and loosen the upper ball joint, steering arm, and lower ball joint. on the knuckle/hub assembly, there will be places of excess steel that kinda tells you where to hit at to free things up. of that doesnt work, then use a 3-jaw pitman puller. BE CAREFUL NOT TO MUSHROOM THE THREADS! once those 3 points are free, you can remove the entire knuckle/hub assembly. you may have to tap on the driveaxle to retract thru the hub. once everything's out, remove the 4, 12mm bolts from the backside of the hub. then remove the 4, 14mm bolts on the other side of the disc. What I do is screw the lug nuts back onto the studs and use a large prybar to hold the disc still so that it won't rotate as i'm trying to loosen the 14mm bolts. once all the bolts are off, use a large socket....(the one you used to remove the axle nut) and the mallet to knock off the hub from the steering knuckle. once those two are separated, use common sense to do everything else. installation is the reverse of removal.have fun!
I didn't do my fronts, but I wrote up a little DIY for the rear with pictures .. check this out.

This thread has an excellent tech write-up on how to change your front rotors.
