Default Jackstands or Rhino Ramps?

Like the title says...

Which do you have, and why?

And what should the price of decent jackstands cost you? I saw some 1000 lb. stands for 10-15 bucks. I'd hate to have the car fall on my face because I'm cheap.

Both.

I don't need jack stands for changing the oil, the ramps are just fine.

Kind of hard to take off the wheel if I'm using ramps.

Jack stands don't need to be expensive, but make sure the cradle on them is big enough to hold what you are working on.

I have four very cheap jackstands... 1500lbs maybe? I've never had a problem with them.

What I need now is a better jack for to put the car on the cheap jackstands.d

The rhino ramps are solid and will work great for everything where you don't have to remove the wheel. I can even back my truck onto them with the trailer attached (with the car on it) and they hold solid. As for jackstands, don't spend a ton of money but make sure they have a wide footprint for stability. Also try to find some with a very low bottom setting. Sometimes I feel like I have to jack the car up a lot higher than I need just to make room for the jackstand.

I like the larger sized jack stands. I bought 4 at Sam's club. They are like 14-16 inches high at the lowest setting. I guess TC Kline drilled this into my head when I worked for him. He would always get pissed if the cars were not "as high as they will go." It does make it much easier to work underneath when it is a couple feet off the ground. The bigger ones are also much safer imho.

My car is too low to use ramps. The spoiler hits and pushes the ramps before the wheels get on them.

Tall stands - shop the discount stores for Chinese-made, ratchet types. Hell for stout. Ramps are evidence that a person doesn't work on his/her own car much.

they both have their uses. (unless your car is so slammed that it wont go on the ramps )
ramps are great for quick motor/gear oil changes

LOL, I think my CRX is less than 2" below stock and its not even close. In fact I don't know if my ramps would have worked on my car at stock height.

I love the ramps for backing the truck onto to make loading the trailer easier without scraping the spoiler of the car, which is the only use they get now.

In the old days when my ramps were in more use, half the time they would shoot out from under the tires as you tried to drive up the things. It does help to have the drive wheels going up the ramps.

True. I use relatively beefy stands. I also welded steel plates to the bottom of the stands to spread the load on uneven surfaces.
Got that tip from Roger Foo.

I have both. I couldn't get my car onto the Rhino ramps until today Went to Home Depot and purchased some 8'x1'x2" planks to make the incline easier for my lowered car to get onto. Plus now the ramps are also 4" higher so it's easier to slide underneath

My wife's car gets on there with ease. I also have 4 jack stands from Craftsman.

Funny. Me too. Don't have to use wood underneath them to keep them from 'denting' the asphalt in the paddock that way too.

the problem is that the $16.99 jack stands from norther tool become $32 jack stands using the cheapest shipping method. worth checking local autopart stores.

Has 3 pairs of Wal-Mart $8.88/pr 2000# jackstands

Why jackstands? They are easier to use and easier to store.

Jackstands are jackstands. They are simple mechanisms and there isn't a whole lot that can go wrong with them. I have yet to have a problem out of mine.

If you are concerned then leave the jack under the car as a failsafe. I usually do this anyway (always have used both jacks/jackstands together).

Harbor Freight has free shipping for orders over $50

Thanks for the replies. Jackstands sound like the best investment (yes, 20 dollars is an investment for me).

I just have to find a place to store them

You can easily extend most ramps to fit under low spoilers and bodyword by placing a 2"x8"x3-4' piece of wood on the lower part of the ramp. Driving up onto the wood gets the front end a couple inches higher off the ground before approaching the ramps. This has worked well on my 87 Accord and my Jetta, both of which are lowered.

What are you doing messing around with ramps then, you should just have a hoist in that shop.

Storage is going to be a riot. I live in an apartment complex with an underground garage; whch means no garage storage.

Jackstands might make a nice night stand, or a flower pot stand. I need to convince my girlfriend of their esthetic/practical properties.
