Default Type-R Expo -- Lateral Acceleration Test

I was thinking with all the ITRs at the expo, it would be the perfect time to put some numbers behind the various suspension setups. I would love to see how many G's the mugen lowdown setup pulls compared to a Spoon setup, compared to coilovers, etc, etc

All it would take is a little coordination, a GTech Meter, and a small parking lot that you can draw a big circle on.

It's going to be hard isolating the suspension as the only variable since people will have different tire/wheel combinations as well.

just used one set of wheels and tires. stock wheels with stock tires or stock wheels with Azenis or whatever we deem worthy. (TE37's with hoosiers?)

maybe everyone could use the same set for the test purposes? it only takes a sec to change some wheels.

EDIT: Trey beat me to it

Isn't there a skidpad at Beaverun? Sounds like a good idea.

I have an old functioning G--Analyst that I'd be willing to bring along, and the software for saving the info to a laptop.
It does take a little while to install and calibrate in a car though.

there's a big flat expanse of asphalt, where we run autoXes, that would make a more than suitable skidpad...dunno if it'll be available tho, or if it costs extra, but it's there.

Are we going to need that space for parking with 102 R's?

There's a specifically-designated skidpad area, too. If it doesn't cost extra, using that would be ideal.

And let me say that I think this is an awesome idea!

Somebody else mentioned that tires would make a difference when evaluating the suspension. Well, why not evaluate the tires, too while were at it! It would be freakin awesome to have an objective comparison between the different tires available for our cars!

They're all from the same cars, so we could easily swap wheels and tires onto a single test car to get a very fair comparison between as many different types of tires as we have time for. It's just a matter of having the time finding people willing to let us test their tires.

I was starting to calm down, but now I'm getting all excited about going to expo again!

The only way would be to fake a death. Working for a tax firm means no time off during taxseason including saturdays.

It's an excellent idea.

But, just like the header test, it wouldn't provide any concrete info. For instance, w/ Tein HA's, who's going to run every single dampening and height adjustment? Same goes for other coilover systems.

Also, since every car will have different suspension setup (sway, weight reduction, strut bar) it would be hard to judge the test under the same conditions sans tires/wheels/coilover package.

Anyway, it would be fun to watch... one thing will be sure: regardless of the suspension, a perfectly dialed in car will come out on top.

no, there's plenty of coarsely paved and gravel pit/paddock area that's seperate from the nicely paved "vehicle dynamics course" (big parking lot)

and improvements are made all the time as they build things, first time i was there the main road was a gravel and dirt rally course, a month later it was paved, and a month after that it was kinda chewed up again with some manholes and stuff going in...who knows where they'll be next spring

I used one of those G-Tech things last summer, I managed a 1.09 G on 15 x 7.5 inch wide SSR Comps and Kumho V700 tires on a Pennsylvania offramp.

maybe one of the sponsors or we can find a potential sponsor to donate a set of rims and tires to use for the test. Edge Racing (i believe they are a sponsor on HT, too) does alot of advertising. They might be interested in doing such a thing.

http://www.edgeracing.com i think is their website.

Thats what RealTime Racing pulls! Stock suspension?

That sucks that you won't be able to make it. I'll be sure to take lots of pics/video for you. On a sadder note my R was broken into last Thursday- broken passenger side window, stole my bass tube and screwed my ignition. Luckily after arguing with the insurance company they're going to pay for all damages, including the bass tube, without upping our rates to bad. Mailny because we put the T as my pleasure vehicasl, and my Civic as the daily driver. BE careful with your R. If it's not safe in a Ukrops parking lot, while I was working, then where is it safe. Anyway about the G's pulled compared to RealTime, was the testing done with Realtime done on the Toyo's that they race on. That might have something to do with it, though I'm sure testing conditions and the diameter of the testing circle has something to do with it to. Sorry for gettin a bit off topic.

It was indeed on stock suspension, hot summer afternoon...not very controlled, but that's what the thing read.
