Default Thoughts on a test pipe for the Type R.

Slowass was thinking of ordering a test pipe for the R. Was wondering how others like their test pipe or why people have chosen not to buy them?

I bought one from Comptech like 3 weeks ago, they sent me a GSR one After sending it back and all that, finally got the one for the R today. I'd like any opinions, as well.

Don't school buses put out alot of pollution? I know I get oil sprayed all over my car every time I'm behind one and that HUGE black cloud of smoke billows out of the bus (which is everytime the driver gets on the gas). I would think buses and dumptrucks put out more pollution that a Type R with a test pipe would... I'm not trying to fight, I am just curious.

I think it's irresponsible and inconsiderate to use a test pipe on the street.

As for the "school bus," diesel exhaust is deceptive. Modern diesels produce fewer raw hydrocarbon emissions than gasoline engines, however they produce soot (the black crap you're seeing). The soot is unsightly, but since it is heavier than hydrocarbon emissions it does not rise into the atmosphere.

And keep in mind that diesels get appx. 30% better fuel milage than gasoline engines, so a diesel school bus will pollute less than a gasoline powered one by virtue of less consumption.

Personally, I think the B18C5 is an excellent example of a factory produced high performance engine that is also socially responsible. Living in California, I appreciate the good air quality (cept maybe when I'm in LA sometimes), so a test pipe would not be in the equation, at least for me.

BTW.... 1st post !

I have one on my car (which is in the body shop for the next 3 weeks!!! ) right now. I have had it for 3 weeks, and will be putting on my new Carsound Cat once it arrives from Mike M at IPS. (Thanks again Mike) I can't tell you how much more sound it creates, because I put my fujitsubo exhaust on at the same time as the test pipe. I plan on using the test pipe ONLY at the track from now on.

Advantages:
more power, less restrictions (I'm also guessing a bit louder)

Disadvantages:
Illegal (large fine in States with emissions)
Bad for environment
Stinky (only at WOT at high rpms it gets stinky sometimes)
Stinking up everyone behind you when you get on the throttle
Illegal (you don't want to be caught with one of these!!!)

For 'off road' use, its excellent. Just not in daily driven, around town settings.

Addition to above post:
Personally, I'd like to keep it on for one reason: power!!

However, We do have 'environment conscious' cars and I'm not interested in contributing to our environmental problems any more than I have to.

That, and the risk-reward is just not worth it. I don't know ANYONE who has got caught with a test pipe in chicago, but it would be just my luck that I'd be pulled over and found out. The fine is substantial, I know that. I do like stinking up people behind me, especially when its a stunna getting ready for a flyby or a rich snotty person who is tailgating or just cut me off. Smoke This!!!

You want to have a cat on hand regardless for emissions.

The only reason i want to get a test pipe is so that i dont have to spend a thousand dollers a year on buying brand new carsound cats... Ive heard way too many people saying that there carsound cats are getting messed up and some of them are only after like a week of use. what the hell is that, you know?

You have to tune if you are running rich with a carsound. Cats can only handle a certain degree of heat, think of dumping fuel right inside the cat and igniting it - what do you think would happen?? Running rich (with higher flow from h/e mods) has a similar effect.

Plus, if you have a handful of mods, you should tune anyways to get your money's worth out of the mods and tuning device. When tuned, a carsound's chances of failing are miniscule. Also, if you have read the posts/threads about failing cats, SMSP and other distributors of Carsound's Cats made it clear that less than 1% of all cats sent out are 'faulty', to their knowledge.

Anyone here use the Comptech high flow cat? I've never seen anything about them on here. I know they're over $300, but they probably fit great and last forever.

Good point, but from the way this world is now. I think we've got alot more things to worry about besides Smog and pollution.

I loved my testpipe whenver I got it. I had it on my car for about 3-4 months and loved the power/throttle responce. The downside is that my CEL came on, it made my back bumper brownish/kinda burnt lookin around the tip, faded ALL the clearcoat off my back bumper, and its a $2,000 dollar fine in TX if your caught without a cat. They have these new things they set up on the off/onramps to the highway where it shoots a lazer across the 1 lane and reads your output. IF it see's that your Integra puts out as much exhaust fumes as an 18 wheeler, it snaps a pic and u get a fat ticket in the mail. I took it off and save it for tracks, its only 5 bolts. I don't even need that extra HP on the streets and see no reason why you need one on a daily driver.

This is the reason I put my testpipe back on the car. Plus I dont really like the raspy noise it produces. But I blew out my cat not even having it more than a month. But because the sound was getting on my nerves, I put my blown out cat back on until I get another one made.

Plus it seems like gas milage is cut short when you run the TP. I had it on when we went to Speedtrials at Gingerman. And my friends riding behind me had to slow down behind me cause they said the smell was killing them. I dont know if iIm crazy , but it also seems when Im still moving fast enough in traffic that cars will slow down or change lanes. And either drop back or try to pass me up.
I always wonder if its from the smell(which I think it is).
