how are 88-89 so much lighter
The doors of the 90-91 are reinforced because of their door mounted seatbelts because I guess the door has to take the stress or something. I guess they came with more luxury features to.
The seatbelts in the doors started in 89, 88 was the year where they were on the inside....I believe the 88 crx si weighs around 2014lbs stock....I loved my 88 si cause it was so light

I know the seatbelts from the 90-91 make it heavier, the door side trims are a bit fatter, the taillights have an additional reflector inside, some of them have painted bumpers, some even came with rear speakers, Si had the sunroof and better seats. This is all that I can think of.

Thats funny, then my 89 with pillar mounted seat belts must be quite rare

88-89 didnt have useless crap in them. pillar mounted belts = no big door = no big glass, less plastic dash/console ****, less tar/sound deadening. i dont have: cig lighter, clock, passenger side mirror. seatbelt light **** by the rear view. i also dont have an interrior
i finally figured out this seatbelt thing. here goes.
88-89 hatches had floor mounted seatbelts.
88 crx's had floor mounted seatbelts.
those should be correct.

In Canada, no CRX's came with door mounted seatbelts.
My 88 DX is so low option: no lighter, passenger side mirror, no tach, no rear wiper... nada. Options are: seats, shift ****.

The seats in the 88-89 are ligher too. I compaired them once and my 89's are very light compared to the 90-91's.
And I am sure the 90-91 doors make a big differnce too. Have you ever felt the difference? It's gotta add close to 100 lbs right there.

All 89 HF's came with the pillar belts like the 88's. The 89 SI and DX and all 90-91's have the door belts. This applies only to the USDM
My '89 DX dosen't have door mounted belts. Maybe its a Date of manufacture issue nore than modle year.

88 CRX HF:
- smaller gas tank
- no rear windshield wiper/no motor for wiper
- smaller front brakes
- smaller rear brakes
- smaller front/rear bumper supports
- no rear cargo cover
- no clock
- no tilt stearing.
- pillar mounted belts.
I love my 1850lb hf. and the fact that I think it is the only one in my province because they didn't sell them in canada.

To clarify a few things, as someone stated, it is the date of manufacture not necessarily the year. A friend bought an 89 si made in november with door mounted seat belts. Generally the 88's and 89's come with pillar belts.
The majority of the weight difference also as someone stated is mainly in the doors itself, I own an 88 crx si. A friend of mine owns a 91 crx si. I have to like, rock the door to close it in his car due to me being used to just flicking my wrist to close my own door. The reason for this is, as I was once told and have read on several websites, the 88's and 89's are missing a few safety features that the 90/91's came with. One being side impact beams.
ps, living in MD/DC with a lowered car that weighs less than 2100 pounds is not recommended
