Default I hate AEM intake

anyone ever drove through a big puddle with your AEM intake? i didnt even think of it and half way threw my car dies. i had to get out in the middle of the puddle with water up to my ankles and push my car in the pouring rain while everyone honks at me. after waiting about an hour it finally started again so i drove home with out the intake on. I HATE AEM INTAKES!

They make a bypass valve for them so you dont suck up water

and you should take off the lower portion of the intake during rainy days

its not AEM intakes that you hate, its cold air intakes obviously. You should have taken the bottom portion off for the season.

area 51 in irvine,ca dynoed their 98 type R with with "cold air intake" and then cut the cold air intake to make it a short ram and gained 5hp. So when you buy your "cold air intake" think twice.

there has to be more to the story than that...did they perhaps take out the highbeam headlight...to make it a ram air...which is basically a cold-air intake...

Also, NitrousDreams USE THE SEARCH BUTTON! Read more before you make posts like this. The AEM CAI is the best intake currently available for our car. I personally would like an ICE box like Comptech makes but no such luck.

Would this matter on a dyno ? I mean I can see how it would matter when you drive cause your moving but on a dyno your sitting still. Maybe if they had the fan going. I am not trying to start stuff, just woundering. Also I can't see how a short ram would give you 5 more hp. And it was your fault for driving threw the puddle, just be glad that you did not mess the engine up worse.

Should have take into consideration of the situation you were in. if it raining hard i would avoid driving in the rain. dont blame the CAI intake blame the user of the CAI intake.
This happened to me once. it was raing really hard one night, so to avoid the situation you were in i pulled off the road. After stopping i removed the extension and made my CAI into a short ram. cost me half an hour but saved me a big headache. I'm not trying to flame you, but sometimes you have to stop and think. Just my .02

Ok well My car was .2 sec faster with a 3" short ram generic intake and no headlight compared to a AEM intake. Plus the short ram sounds better in VTEC... A lot lower then the AEM... but AEM is a great intake but dont think it is for me...

Usually, on the dyno, cold air intakes like the AEM will make incredible midrange power and decent top end. When you see ad's for AEM CAI's making "14-18" hp, they're looking at the spike in the midrange, which is great, if you're looking to get some pull in the midrange. The short rams will usually make decent power in the midrange, with more useable power on the top end. Really just depends on what kind of power you're trying to make.

hey man, i feel your pain, i did the exact same thing back around 2003 with my original D16 engine on my CRX SI,

i had a long-style cold air intake that went down into bumper region, and it was a day where it was raining a lot and the sides of the roads had tons of water flowing all over the place,.......i just really did'nt think with good common sense, and thought i would be fine just being carefull going slow, but i was just going 30mph and just took a little blip of the throttle and it was just enough to suck water into the intake!!

at first i just thought my car simply stalled, but after looking around the engine bay i realised that it blew a fist-sized hole in the engine block !!!

so that was how my original D16 engine ended for my crx si, and sucked cause it had lower miles and was in great running condition, and just all wasted cause my stupidity.

but in the end, i'm kind of glad, because of that happening i learned about the ZC dohc engine, and the shop my car was towed to recommended i get one used imported from japan instead of another used D16 from U.S., they said it be cheaper, so i ended up having the shop put a ZC in.

8 or 9 yrs later, i still have that ZC, and it runs great still,

......only downside is not knowing how many miles are on the engine, and having to do a little guesswork on when to do certain tune-up maintanance stuff.
