cooling fan circuit help
i tried the search but all the problems that come up are about fans that dont work. Mines the exact oppisite. Fan wont shut off unless the car isnt running. As soon as the key is turned to ignition power, the fan kicks on.
Do you think i gotta problem with the relay or the thermo switch.
any help is appreciated
thanx

why would the sensor plug be bridged? No body was ******* with it or anything. The fan worked properly till about a few days ago. I'm thinking the relay is stuck, cuz if it was the sensor acting up i'd flash a code right?
anyway, thanx
anyone else?

if you messed with the relay, look closer to it to see if your are using a two way relay and are connected to the NC (normaly close ) side, if not, just pop it out and unsee a tester to see if the inside contact are welded together, it append some time.

unplug the thermo switch on the back of the engine and test the problem then. The fan should not come on. If it does, you have a wire that is grounding when it shouldn't. That will be a nice headache for you.
If it doesn't come on, check the thermo switch and make sure it's electrically OPEN when the engine is cold. If it shows to be CLOSED (shorted0 then you have a bad thermo switch.
The fan will not operate without ground to the system so it has to be that the thermo switch or it's wiring is the problem.

before you start bunging around with the thermoswitch (which is not easy to get to) check your relay. use a multimeter and check continuity across the fan leads (i don't have my helms with me, can someone please tell us which leads ont he relay are for the fan?). if you have continuity, your relay is bad.
the reason i say do this first is because it's super easy to do, and there is a very good chance that it's the problem.

well as serious suggested, i went out today with my trusty DVOM and un-hooked the relay. On the 4 prong relay, with no power conected, i found continuity between terminals A & B. The helms manual says this means i need a new relay.
Thanks for the input man, greatly appreciated
Just didnt have access to my tools or manual since i keep them at school

sorry to bring back an old thread...but damn i'm having the same problem AND yes i think they bridged the wiring for the sensor on the back of the engine block cause i looked on the connector and there is only one wire instead of two for the cooling temp. switch on the BACK of the motor. how can i fix this???
There's two plugs back there. Make sure you are looking at the right plug. It's supposed to be a rubber boot with 2 connections in it.
